Please remember to tell us what you are working on. This section is for all gens, so knowing if it is an SA, FB, FC, or FD really helps.

On the S4, if the alternator starts to fail it causes the idiot lights to turn on. Also, there is a relay in the CPU that controls this warning feature. This feature could be causing the vibrating sound you hear in that area. The voltage signal needs to be above a certain threshold for the engine circuits to run properly and perhaps this is what caused your problem.

Question, I know what the FC, and FD are. I do not know the other two, I also understand they have to do with the motors. Can you help me translate? I have an 83 12a, what would mine be? Sorry new to the rotary world.

I think satch is pointing in the right direction...that your immediate problem is very low voltage. And the other guys are right...if the alternator belt is broken, it's an easy find / easy fix.

Other possibilities:
  • Alternator belt is there but loose
  • Dirty / loose battery terminals
  • Dirty connector between alternator & battery
  • Alternator has failed

If the belt is there and tight and battery terrminals are good, before pulling the alternator to have it tested, there is a connector you should check. It is just below the main fuse box on the driver side shock tower in a heavy gauge black wire. It connects the alternator output to the main fuse and ignition switch and from there back to the battery. If it is heavily oxidized (mine was), the power generated by the alternator can't get through.

My voltage never dropped low enough for your symptoms, but almost any electrical load caused the volt meter to drop. You can't see this in your T2 'cause it has the boost gauge instead of volt meter.

Oh yeah. About it happening while you were pulled over? By chance was it at night and raining? Worst case electrical load for a weak charging system is engine idling (low alternator output) with brake lights and flashers and headlights and wipers and maybe heater all operating (high load).

BTW, sorry about the ticket.

So any problems since then or is it stiil the same as when you were pulled over? Maybe it's not an electrial / alternator problem at all. I think it's still worthwhile to check that connector the allows the alternator output to feed back to the battery. But if that's good and the battery & terminals are ok, I'm having trouble seeing it as an electrical problem.
