Oil filter question

So I went to the store today to get everything for an oil change. My first one on an fd so pls excuse the newb question, if posting in the newb section isn't enough. Anyway, the one on the left was the filter that was installed and the one on the right is what the book, at the auto store, said to use. Looks like the new one would fit right on so I'm guessing the previous owner opt to use a bigger filter.

Are there any benefits for using a bigger filter? And should I just buy another one like it instead? Thanks in advanced.

-Marty

Your good to go.
That K&N is expensive.(some have a replaceable filter element or cleanable?.I think)
The STP?..not really familiar with the quality of it,even though it is STP.
I use WIX.

You'll get Tons of advice on what to use for a Filter, and if you wanna see a ****-Fest,ask whether you should use synthetic or conventional oil!
It'll start a Never ending debate...lol!

SO Oil threads are just WIPED in this Section as they are posted repeatedly. No sense in taking up space!

All rotaries I've seen have at least some fuel dilution...and by nature change intervals should be closer than what your used to. Especially since you're turbocharged. Filters aren't that critical but I personally like Purolator. Pure1 if I'm feeling flush or they're on sale. That K & N is probably fine but overkill IMO.
