Question No compression = rebuild

I have a 90' FC with zero compression in #1. Before I pull the engine is there any thing that would cause this other than seal failure?

Thanks,
Dave

Nope. If there is no compression on any faces, multiple apex or side seals are damaged/missing.

That was my conclusion as well. I just wanted to make sure I had'nt missed something before I take the lump out.

It's not too big of a deal since I had planed for the eventuality of a rebuild when I bought a car parked behind a barn for 12 years.

Has the engine been run in those 12 years? If not, it's very likely the apex seals are stuck in their slots.

When I bought the car the owner told me it ran but was down on power. After dragging it home I follwed the advice in a thread from this forum about starting a car after a long and obviously improper storage.

Long story short, it started right up but after warmup the idle got erratic swinging between 700 and 2000rpm. I drove it around the block but it could'nt pull the hat of your head. The most it will do is pull 3000rpm in second, if you try third it wants to die.

When I checked the compression the plug from #1 was black, glazed and smelled of gas. #2 was a normal brownish and dry with no smell.

I have a friend with a bore scope and will check inside before I pull the lump out but I fully expect to find the apex seals to be torn up or missing.

It's not a big deal, like I said it was expected. For $300 I can't complain.

If you're already resigned to the fact that you need to rebuild, why not try decarbonizing first:

If the engine has been sitting so long, don't even bother trying to make it work. Disassemble it and take stock of what is good, if anything. Then decide whether you are going to rebuild it or replace it and sell the extra parts on eBay.

After further investigation with the borescope, there are some pieces missing from 2 of the apex seals. So out it comes.
Thanks for all the input.

Hi! I have the same problem with my '87 TII and I'll start to brake down the engine, in order to check damaged parts and seals. i'll appreciate any gaskets, apex seals (3MM) and other goodies necssaries for my engine. I'm located in Oak Grove, KY and can't afford a rebuild without some help from you guys. Any extra goodies are very welcome. I can pay for S&H. Thanks, Javier text 2543382112.
