Unhappy Newbie needs help, please

Hey everyone, let me first start off with I've searched and read and searched and read and cannot come to a conclusion as far as my problems are.

I've recently got my '94 Rx7 PEP. Weather has been pretty chilly lately and car is in a garage also. Now with that said, I went out to start my Rx7, with the key in the ON position, there is rapid clicking and sounds like the fan comes on (too scared to run out and look becuase I immediately shut off car). But then I proceed to start the car, which has trouble doing so. After getting it started and idling for about 3-4 mins, there is a click that sounds like it coming from the waterpump. When it clicks, the waterpump 'hesitates' and the fan kicks on but immediately after it does so, the fan shuts off. Maybe about every 1-3 mins. I figured because it was cold, so I started to take it around the block to warm up, but the car would bog out of nowhere and 'hop' until I change gears. I got kinda scared and brought it back home.

Could this be a fuel problem? It did smoke at first startup but not as much after I drove it. RPM gauge does not work so I cant really say when it bogs. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yep AC still connected and works and the car is twin. Just recently it has stopped clicking and the fan also does not come on anymore when the key is in the ON position. But fan does work when AC is on or when I am driving it so Im assuming nothings wrong now? :scratchhead:

Now a problem I am worried about now actually is the 'bucking'/hesitations. Ive searched and read about it being normal? Also another member told me it is normal and the a PFC would solve my problems. I am worried about this now due to having to take my car through emissions and where Im located they put the car on 'rollers', kind of like a dyno and idle it at a certain speed. If it is to buck, Ide probably fail.

so your on a stock computer?

go over your grounds and your vacuum system both might also be the cause of your problems

i no what that is, we used to have that in jersey, they just recently stopped because of the hazards of people flying off the rollers...and people are dumb

i was tempted to bring my fd to one because of the amusement of watching the poor bastard try and work my clutch, but failed inspections leave paper trails

on a side note, ever consider just paying for an inspection?

update: it failed emissions due to HC. too much unburned fuel, i suppose. so i checked the plugs and they were all the '9's for trailing. so i had it sit for a few days because of work. now the car doesnt start. changed to all new plugs, '7' in leading and '9' in trailing. still nothing. now im not getting spark and am waiting on getting a voltmeter to check my coils.

btw, does anyone know what this is and where its suppose to go?! sorry for crappy picture. it was just lying there o_O

That sir, is your knock sensor. it should be screwed into the top of the intermediate iron close to the oil filler neck. I'm no good with S6's though, so good luck with the rest.

Doesn't sound like a fuel problem. Sounds electrical. Give us the history of the car as you know it.

Mileage on the car?
Mileage on the engine?
Was the wiring harness ever replaced?
Who has done the work on the car?

The non-start could be a weak battery and it could also be somewhat flooded from starting and not driving it sufficiently to burn the fuel off.

The clicking near the water pump could be a bad wire that may be arcing. The fan sensor is there near the water pump.

I can't even begin to imagine what you mean by the water pump hesitating or the car hopping so be more descriptive. Sounds kinda funny right now.

That pic of yours is the knock sensor as BomberMan mentioned. The fact that it is sitting around loose in the engine bay makes me question the competency of the monkeys that wrenched on the car previously...
