MSD ignition on a first gen

Anyone here have experience with installing an MSD ignition on their first gen? I've read the Mazspeed.com install page, and they have no cons stated for switching over, but Racing Beat doesn't have anything good to say about it, warning about "cross triggering."

Any first hand experience out there?

Did you consider it a worthwhile modification?

I'm at a crossroads between going all out with an MSD L6, or just upgrading the coils and wires, with a new cap and rotor and better plugs.

to be completely honest, i don't really have a quantitative assessment of it. i bought it and installed it based on the recommendation of a friend that i thought knew what he was talking about. as it turns out, i didn't NEED it at my power level. i kept using it until i scrapped the car 5 years later at which point i installed it in my MR2 Turbo. never had a problem with it on either car. i don't regret it, but if i knew then what i know now, i probably would have opted not to buy i. to be honest, i still have it and it will probably end up going on my current Gen I when i put it back together.

i'm not familiar with the L6 (i had a 6AL), but i'll assume it's an amplifier, too. anyway, what are your plans with the engine?

my opinion: if you're keeping things mild, i would probably say get some good coils and maybe stay stock or do a DLIDFIS setup and call it a day. if you're going for forced induction or radical ports, only then would i consider amplification.

Sorry for the long silence, didn't have internet for a while there. So for now, I just went with a new cap and rotor, magnacore wires, NGK BR7EIX plugs and two MSD Blaster 2 coils.

However, upon installing all this stuff I get a warning in the coil's instruction manual saying that these coils are designed for use with a MSD L6 or L7, and that if you're using them with a stock points system you need to utilize the 8ohm ballast resistor and wiring (sold separately of course.)

Is this warning valid for the application? I was looking forward to starting her up, but now I'm scared to do so..

unless there has been some major change in the Blaster 2 coils since around 1994-ish, you can use them without issue. I did. I used them for a while before I bought and installed my 6AL. I don't recall any mention of an 8 ohm resistor, but then again it was almost 20 years ago, so ....
