Looking for a shifter part, desperately need info

So I've got an 88 turbo ii, motor was rebuilt 1500mi ago and I just bought myself a new (rebuilt) trans. Now the problem i'm having is this...On the bottom of the shifter where it actually goes into the trans, I need all those parts. I've got the bushings, but my trans guy tells me there should be something else. Mind you he's not an rx7 expert, but he's been doing transmissions for a very long time, more old school style guy, I trust him.

So the question is, other than the bushings, what else is down there parts wise? He's saying there should be an insert to go into the bottom with a rounded top to fit the pivot ball, but I cannot find this part anywhere. I really want my car back, and i'm so close, but I really need a hand finding this. Thanks in advance.

Well having just redone all of what you just mentioned, I think I can help you out.

On an s4 there is no bushing that goes under the shifter ball into the trans. It is a direct ball and socket setup. FDs have a smaller ball and a replaceable bushing. That part is important to know. Don't go buying a bushing and cramming it into the shifter socket, you will be sadly disappointed.

In terms of parts, you should have and only need the following:

Shifter
Shifter "gasket" (metal plate that bolts to the trans, has built-in paper gasket and rubber boot seal)
Lower shift boot (rectangle shaped thick boot with a large hole in the center)
Lower boot plate (metal ring that bolts the lower boot to the body of your car)
Upper shifter boots (there are 2, both have the same P/N and fit around the lower boot and fit tight to the shifter)
Actual leather shifter boot

Check that you have those things. The lower and upper shift boots can be bought in a kit off atkins rotary or mazdatrix. The lower shifter seal is usually what goes first too.

Do you have all this? And like I said, there is no bushing under the shifter. I know your guy is old school and im sure he knows his stuff, but there is no bushing.

If he's thinking about the bushing then they are in S5's.
There however is a Shifter return spring that is located on top of that "little block that the lower ball of the shifter slips into"
