"LIMP" mode?
im new to the forum as well as the rotary. I have a 90' gxl that from what I am reading is going into a limp mode. runs quite good for about a half hour or so and then all of a sudden loses power and wants to die out under load but idles fine... first thing im looking into starting with is checking my grounds. any other opinions would be much appreciated. And also it hunts for idle on warm up. but once warm it evens out. TPS adjustment? thanks Kris.

look up Pulling codes on an S5.
27 and 28 I belive are OMP related.
The OMP(oil metering pump) is usually what makes the ECU go into Limp mode
Limp mode is to protect the engine as the Ecu sees no signal from the OMP.If the signal to the ECU is lost then it says "Woah..this may hurt the old wankel!"..so it goes into limp mode. Then you can't drive the car and have to LOOK at it to fix the problem.

okay. I will look that up and take a look this weekend see if I get it to throw either of those codes. if so would this mean that I have a bad OMP? And ive read that the ECU can be effected by limp mode is this true? could it explain the idle issue on warm up?

Went through the limp mode on my 90 GXL over the past 6 months. Pulled code 27 only. Putting in a new battery cleared it up for 5 months, but it returned. Had an open between pins 1 and 2 in the OMP.
I sent the ECU to RTEK for the 1.0 chip and now premix the gas. Car now runs perfect. Very happy and car has cats so no smoking at all from the premix. If you research premix on here you will find most think it is actually better for your engine.
Need to be sure your ECU is not fried before you send it off. Mine was fine, but a short in the OMP may do the ECU in.
Good luck, just don't put it off and blow your engine.
A new OMP is over $1500. A used one will most likely have the same problem eventually.
