WA ITs hard to be old and new at sametime

new member hoping the first thread works and dont waste anyones time.iIm 60 yr.old guy who fell in love with a 80 sa. stock except for headers. Its a auto and i have to say i like it.I will concentrate on keeping my question on point.the motor is low miles recently Reb. nikki car WAS fine until I decided to put Gumout gas ADD in tank.It started to run bad i changed filter by tank it had stff in it iput new filter on backwards wondered why it was now cutting out at 4000rpm.Soi fooled with timing no help...Next day wont start.so over the next week of continuing turning it over it is now beginning to want to make a scraping noise and not want ing turn over?I can turn motor over buy hand and seems ok.What do you guys think i did.I am not a mechanic i just thoght i could do a simple thing like filter thanks for your time... depressed in seattle.

Welcome to the forum Scott!

Try posting in this section -> NW RX7 Forum

There's got to be someone nearby that can help you out. I'm not very familiar with FB's, let alone carburetors.

Welcome Scott...from another old guy.

Not that familiar with your 1st Gen. but this is what I would do:
*Get another filter and install it correctly.
*Return timing to previous settings..or as close as possible without starting the car.
*From your description of the sound, I'm speculating the starter solenoid is failing to engage completely. I can't remember of you can change JUST the solenoid or if it's more of an assembly with the starter like my car.

As a side-note for future posts, try to use proper spelling and grammer without too many abbreviations. Alot of smart guys here with answers you might need, but they don't like to work too hard at deciphering posts.

WA Man why did i do that..

New member First off thanks to the people that keep this Site operating..I have been helped with suggestions from moderators on how to operate this site while Very frustrated about being a Newbe and For messing my car up...My car is a 1979 rx-7.It is stock except headers and has a Electronic Ignition. It is a Automatic and had been well maintained before i bought it.One day it started smoking and it contiuned to smoke REAL bad. Had it looked at it was fried..Found a motor in Florida from a place that has motors 900 dollarsand this included shipping it to seattle were i live.1200 more dollars to have it it installed. The car was great until 4 wks ago when i thought putting some Gumout Gas tank additive was a good idea.It did its job clogged the rear gas filter.Their was old crap in it filter.I will speed this up for you guys..I put on filter backwards wondered why my car was losing power?Never in this whole time am i knowing or thinking that a filter could be put on wrong.I fool with timing next day wont start .OFF on over 3 or 4days i keep trying to get it to start.IT starts too feel likes grinding while turning over like a motor with no oil. This time when i check plugs the plug in L2 wont fit back into any cylinders because it got so hot it expanded and wont fit back in.i could put other plugs in and the threads are fin.So i can turn it by hand but feels like its catching a little during the turning Revoulution..I hope this makes the cut i dont know how i could make much shorter..Cheers from Seattle..

Hi Scott,

I moved your new thread and combined with the old one so that all the info will be in the same spot.

Several things don't make a lot of sense. How long did you drive it with the rebuild? It is possible that the rebuild wasn't proper. The SAs do not have an oil pressure gauge (unless you added one), so if they messed up on the oil pump, oil pump chain, left the oil pickup loose, etc., you could have been driving with no oil pressure and not even know it. Could be something like a spun bearing (not good) if it is making a lot of noise turning it over. Is the noise coming from the engine or just the starter? Is the engine even a rebuild or is it a used motor from Japan (or out of a wrecked US car)?

The fact that the plug won't go in seems like someone cross-threaded it or somehow messed up the threads. The other thing that can be an issue is if the wrong plugs are used. They should be NGK or Denso and made for the engine. I have seen people sold autolites or another brand from an autoparts store and were too long and the tip of the plugs chipped the apex seals.
