Interested in buying an RX-7, I have some general technical questions!

Hello everyone, this will be my first forum post here.

I've been quite fortunate lately, and in a couple of months I hope to be the owner of an RX-7 FD3S.
I've done quite a lot of research on Wankel engines, but I still have some burning questions that I only want to ask to deal rotary owners, and not keyboard warriors, and I want to make sure that I have as much technical knowledge as possible about these cars, before I get it, so I know how to take the best care of my car. I have the following questions:

- Pre-mix, how common is it? Is it only for ported engines? Do you guys recommend it?
- How long does a stock engine last, under normal driving conditions, before it needs rebuilding? And how long can I expect to run at 350-400 WHP if I were to do some work on it?
- Are there maintenance/repair manuals available online? I'd love to already read a bit into the technicalities of the car, for example, I've never done anything with an oil metering system.
- Are there any other tips you would give to a new owner? Specific maintenance routines?

I'm not going to drive this car daily, but probably only in the weekends, but once again, I'd like to gather as much information as possible. I have the feeling that there is a lot of misinformation on the internet regarding Wankel engines, and I'd like to ask some real owners what is what. Any help or resources is greatly appreciated!

Best regards,

Nick

For Mx Manuals here is a good resource. But most of the questions youve asked can be found in various stickies and using search either on the forum or via google.
Mazda RX-7 Reference Materials

As for pre-mix most people swear by it. Myself my omp is removed so premix is necessary. I mix 12oz to a tank roughly 1 to 1. Might be a bit rich, not sure. For Mx routines, its really just like any car, keep up with the oil, since turbo charged about every 3k miles, check fluids each month or sooner, be mindful of how hot the engine gets.

it is all personal opinion, it has been beat to death on here, do some searching, and make that decision for yourself

- How long does a stock engine last, under normal driving conditions, before it needs rebuilding? And how long can I expect to run at 350-400 WHP if I were to do some work on it?
a OEM STOCK untouched 13B-REW engine can go over 100K, but not many do due to the extra heat of the twin turbos, if you want to run that high of WHP, expect it to be less. BUT, it ALL matters on HOW the engine has been taken care of

- Are there maintenance/repair manuals available online? I'd love to already read a bit into the technicalities of the car, for example, I've never done anything with an oil metering system.

tips? RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. On these cars, ALWAYS know what your getting into, and ALWAYS figure you might need a rebuild within 5 years of owning the car if its never been rebuilt. Before purchasing a wankel, ALWAYS compression test it, it gives you a VERY good idea on how the engine has been taken care of, and how much life it has. Other then that, treat it like a regular car, except redline the damn thing once in awhile!

Thanks for the reply! Yesterday I spent a solid couple of hours browsing the threads on this forum, it's an absolute goldmine. I still have some more reading to do so I best get started! Still, I'm excited to be a future rotary owner.

driving a rotary can be a great feeling, whether its turbo'd or not. I love my 88 gxl, I recently bought a 2012 Mazda 3 with a 6 speed, and thought it was REALLY peppy for a 4 cylinder car, until I hoped back in my 7 for a couple days, holy hell was a accel difference between the two, a rotary just screams to life, at times it even feels like the redline isn't enough for it, and it (sadly) makes you want MORE lol, which Im trying to withhold from, my 88 is all stock, and I'm trying my best to keep it that way

I currently drive a 1992 MR2, with 3S-GTE engine, and its quite powerful, but what really draws me in to the rotary is the unique engine design, and the sound is just incredible.

Since you’re obviously fluent in English this is an excellent book for basic technical knowledge. Great for prospective OR new owners...and addresses all your questions

Seconded. I purchased that book just because it looked like interesting reading material, and it is actually incredibly informative.

Have you considered the RA (Sohn) injection kit? I have one on my rx8 and love it. I premixed for years before and never had an issue. In fact when I went through my motor at the 100k mile mark I went through it to replace rubber and seals. It all looked perfect

The Rotary Aviation OMP adaptor is nice, but packaging becomes an issue on a stock or near stock FD with the stock twins. It's a PITA to install with the engine in the car, you have to find a place for the reservoir and of course...you have to keep it full. Many of us just premix at a reduced rate (~ .5 oz. per gallon) and keep the stock OMP. Many also now have some form of WI/AI which, along with knock control and cooling, more than eliminates carbon issues from the additional oil.
