So on my FC, the only shift boot I have is the leather one on top, and its ripped and torn up for that matter too. I dont care to much about the aesthetics of it, but when I am driving a whole lot of air is blowing up into the car through the boot, because I only have the ripped leather one. I am assuming there are inner boots? The thought of possible Carbon Monoxide poisoning isnt a good one (Have had it before... YUCK) and the smell of the grime isnt very pleasant either when im driving.

What is the setup for the internal boots? How many are there? Can they be aftermarket purchased? Or do I have to pull this part from the junkyard. I did a quick google search and all i've found are the top show boots, nothing really to keep the nasty air out.

look at www.mazdatrix.com.They carry the parts.
Also I used a piece of an old rear Padding(under the rear carpet) and cut it to fit inside the area above the shifter and tucked it into the console to stop the air from flowing through the shifter leather boot.
Crammed it in there and then slammed the surround on.NO air now..lol!..BUT I do miss the hot air in winter!

Styx, thanks for the tip and the mazdatrix reminder! I forgot that they sold more than performance goodies. It appears I also need the return spring, I thought just a non spring was usual for a car this old, being my first car that old.

That spring is a real snotbag..so if you can live without it,then you are good.
Otherwise you are looking at dropping the tail of the trans and installing it.It is not just "put in there"..it wraps around a shifter rod that goes from the tail to the center.Basically half the trans disassembled for a 5 dollar spring..Seriously!
Cost me 5 bucks for the spring and 120 to get it put in..and they EFFED it up!
That spring gets broke with age,and pulling the shifter out..

Oh,if you noticed that spring then you should be putting in new shifter bushings..that will stop the shifter slop.

Good thing I checked back real quick before I finished my order! The spring was never there so I didn't know I would have to move the trans around to put it on. I can Definately live without it, and I was thinking about doing the bushings anyways down there too while I'm at it. Do you think it would have any benefit to replace the actual shifter too? I'm not going short throw, just standard replacement. Also, can I buy the s5 and put it in the s4 if I replace the shifter? I can't seem to find a good **** I like with the s4 threading, and I don't like universal one, been there, have all the t shirts, and have thrown them all away lol!!

Edit: the car has 200,000 miles on the chassis, so now sure how that would affect shifter wear from the actual shifter, if any

the only difference in the s4 to s5 shifter are the thread pitches for the ****.
I got a Shorthrow that had the s4 pattern and I had a shitload of s5 *****!.
Solution?..got the shifter milled to the s5 thread pitch!

Another situation I had with another..yes another s4 shifter..I had a Solid BLOX **** with a S5 pitch..Drilled and tapped that..(ya,baby..take that..lol!)

Great post I was getting hot air and exhaust coming into my 7. But now I know how to fix it.

I am having trouble getting my **** off - could just be afraid to put on too much torque. Any suggestions?

Not sure about the send gens, but on the first gens there's a nut below the shift **** that can be lossend.
