Initial Questions (Please advise)

Hello group.

I have many questions? I would appreciate any answers/ advice to steer me in the right direction. My recent aquisition:
91 Rx7 convertible (Black) n/a
I have had the car now for a few days. Everything works except the convertible top.

Here are my issues/questions?

1. The top went down during initial inspection and test drive. I bought the car, but now I can't get it to go back up. Any one advise me as to different ways to get the top to come up? Is it one motor or two motors for the top?(location?) where are the fuses located for the top? I tried removing the panel behind the seats to raise the top manually, but did not see where to do this. The switch for the top (open/close) is in the middle console in front of the shifter.

2. I believe the lady who had this car before me had replaced the right console switches: it has the wiper control on the bottom, a button for the top? (has icon of car top w/ open)in the middle ,and then the hazard button on top. Is this the right switch cluster for my year? I have the cruise control arm on the steering but there is no "main" activation switch. I am thinking I should have the switch cluster that has the wiper, cruise (main), and hazard buttons? Is this correct? She gave me extra boxes of parts. I have several different combos of switches for the right side console, but I cant determine yet which are good and which are bad. If I have a close/open switch for the top in the middle console by the shifter, then shouldn't my right side cluster switches (next to inst.panel) be wiper (bottom), cruise control (main) in middle, and hazard on top??

3. Where are the different fuse boxes located? I know where the Main one is under hood.

4. What brand of oil? I have read one forum somewhere recommend Royal Purple, but I think it is "synthetic" which I have read others say is a No, No.

5. My car is n/a, so low and medium grade unleaded gas, correct?

6. How can I keep my engine protected (apex seals, carbon buildup, detonation, etc. ) Should I, as one said, drive it like I stole it once a week? LOL.

7. Spark plugs: Which are best, type, and how often??

8. What is this I read about 5th and 6th ports?? How do I know this is happening properly in my car?

9. Is there a place(s) recommended for replacement parts? Is it possible to recover my original (cracked) leather seats or is it cheaper to replace them? I have hail damage and deep scratches on my hood piece. Should I replace it with a turbo hood with a scoop for better air flow and cooling (since my car is black), or should I just have the dings filled in and hood repainted ?

10. Any additives to the fuel or oil ever?

11. What simple things can I do to increase performance and keep the car well maintained?

Thanks,

Derek

I think so. There were several variations of switch. I haven't paid much attention to that switch in a 'vert. The coupe version for rear wiper cars had a rear wiper switch.

The cruise function is totally within that little lever, there is no button for it on the wiper switch assembly.. From memory, I think pushing in the little button near the pivot is the activation. Hold in "Set" until the cruise takes over. Cruise ends if you tap the break, throttle or turn it off.

3. Where are the different fuse boxes located? I know where the Main one is under hood.
Main one is under the hood at the driver shock tower. The interior box is at the drivers kick panel. See the FAQ for the fuse layout.

4. What brand of oil? I have read one forum somewhere recommend Royal Purple, but I think it is "synthetic" which I have read others say is a No, No.
Any quality oil will do the job. Stick to name brands. Synthetic is fine.

5. My car is n/a, so low and medium grade unleaded gas, correct?
87 octane.

6. How can I keep my engine protected (apex seals, carbon buildup, detonation, etc. ) Should I, as one said, drive it like I stole it once a week? LOL.
Just use a name brand oil, don't baby the car, keep up on maintenance. These engines are hardly the ticking time bombs most (ignorant) people will tell you they are.

7. Spark plugs: Which are best, type, and how often??
Stock 7s on leading and 9s on trailing. The FSM (download links in the FAQ) has a maintenance schedule.

8. What is this I read about 5th and 6th ports?? How do I know this is happening properly in my car?
The aux port actuators are located on the lower intake manifold above the exhaust manifold. You should be able to rotate the levers by hand. If that happens, then they work.

9. Is there a place(s) recommended for replacement parts?
Most parts are still available at the dealer.

Is it possible to recover my original (cracked) leather seats or is it cheaper to replace them?
I'd suggest having a local upholstery shop take care of that. The dealer replacement will be VERY expensive.

I have hail damage and deep scratches on my hood piece. Should I replace it with a turbo hood with a scoop for better air flow and cooling (since my car is black), or should I just have the dings filled in and hood repainted ?
If you want the turbo hood, then do it. But it won't matter at all for cooling. Or just have the original painted.

10. Any additives to the fuel or oil ever?
No. Always a waste of time and money.

11. What simple things can I do to increase performance and keep the car well maintained?
Start by reading the 2nd gen FAQ sticky.

The fuses for the top are located under the driver's side dash,up in the corner.
Use the fuse box cover to find out which one needs attention. (I think it says "soft top".)there are pics of the fuse box cover in The "Frequently Asked questions" section above on this Section.
the motors are on each side of the car, left and right..the Left one being the "control side" as it has a box.
The motors rely on micro switches to verify and track movement,..like a valve on a cam: it hits the switch and stops when open or closed.
I've only bean able to raise the roof manually IF I disconnected the arms to the Roof at the Roof/Arm assembly(14mm bolt) and then with the Targa section opened/facing straight up, and locked Pull the whole roof up and lay it to rest on the windshield. Then lock it.
It's a Pain in the ***!.and heavy.
