Installing an AC compressor

My AC compressor went out on my 1993 RX7 R1. The shop wanted 1200 to fix it and I said f... that in not as many words. They told me it was bad when I turn on the AC, the pulley turns at a different speed then the inner part (sorry thats the best explanation I have, its the pulleys that are supposed to be locked by the magnet and controlled by the a/c clutch). I can get a new compressor from advanced auto parts for 300-350 and just get a recharge kit for like 50. I have the battery relocated and an aftermarket intercoller that comes out rather easily. So it looks like I loosen the belt, undo the high and low of the AC line and remove the 2 or 3 bolts from the bracket and install. Has anybody switched it oput before? Any tricks for depressurizing the R134a (its been converted) Should I have it professionally recharged once I put it in? Any answers would be helpful. I am moving to Scottsdale, AZ from Fairfax, VA and if anyone has been to AZ in the summer you know how key AC is in the sumer. Thanks in advance

I just did my 88. I managed to get a newly rebuilt compressor on ebay for $22. There are lots there in the just under a $100 range. You need to change the dryer as well and re add compressor oil before evacuating. If you don't have the tools (gauges and evacuator pump), you'll have to get a shop to do it. The system will have about 150 pounds of pressure in it so go slow when you undo it or get a gauge you can attach to the low pressure(blue) side to let the gas out. I won't go into the environmental issue of that here.
