Ignition Rebuild Questions
Ignition Rebuild Questions
Hey there everyone,
I've done a little digging myself, but I still have some questions regarding my "new" car. It's a 1990 GTU, and I'm having to rebuild/replace the engine (loss of compression in rear rotor, water in the housing) and in the meantime i'm going through as many systems as my budget allows and rebuilding a lot of them.
Case in point, ignition system. The previous owner installed an MSD ignition system (part number 6200) and the car was running with it installed (obviously, before it blew at least). My question is, would it be wise to reinstall this ignition set up or try to return it to stock? Budget is a factor here, as the MSD set up is already paid for and ready to be re-installed, but i need the car to have a good ignition setup, and if the MSD has only given other people troubles, then I'll just go back to stock. What are you guy's thoughts on this? Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

Can you give a few more details about the MSD system?
Typically all that is done is to install an ignition box between the leading ignitor and coil. If that's your setup, you might as well leave it. Installed properly it won't hurt. Won't help, but won't hurt.
If it's some other funky setup, post some pictures/details.

It seems as though this is the case. If I wanted to take it back to stock, all I'd have to do is remove the MSD and all wires, and just put the igniter positive to coil positive, and negative to negative? That's how it's wired originally, right?
Also, I seem to have lost track of which spark wires lead to which plugs (doing and engine swap), is there a wiring diagram I can look at to find this? It's not in the Hayne's manual

it was done poorly, and i have no guarantee it worked. At the very least I'm going to re-wire the MSD with proper wiring. And I'd love to be able to go back to the stock coil/igniter configuration until i get the car running well, then maybe add the MSD back in once I know that most of my other problems are ironed out.

Ok..that box would go to the leading coil.Power to the box is coming from the battery(red and black).
the box is wired to go in between the coils ignitor and the coil.(and it is wired in AT the coil)
If you want to do it QUICK,then just take off the leading coil and put another one on.
IF you choose to use the same coil then you have to cut the wires from the box and spliced the 4 wires at the coil back together,so that the ignitor now is wired to the coil again.
