Well, the GSL-SE would be an EFI setup like series 4+ cars, so you'll have an electric fuel pump located in the fuel tank. There should be a cover plate of some sort that will give you access to the pump.

wrong! 85 GSL-SE has an external electric pump that is mounted on the underside of the car next to the tank. check there also there is a wire underneath the driver's side rear compartment that plugs to the fuel pump in case u want to test it or juice it..

Do you want a cookie? I'm surprised Mazda didn't move to the in-tank design by '85. It was probably cheaper to reuse the older parts & just modify them.

If the fuel pump is not where alex ruano said it is its under a metal plate which is under the carpet in the hatch. I could be wrong though because I'm more of a second gen. guy

im telling u it is not under some cover! i am the proud owner of a gsl-SE and i just upgraded my fuel pump. lift the car up, look underneath just in front of the tank itself and u will see a big hose going into the fuel pump which is mounted just forward of the tank. it is attached to a large bracket!
