Huh? Temp gauge reads higher when lights on!
OK, here's the quirk: My 1982 GS had the gauge cluster changed out by the previous owner. Why, I do not know. Anyway, the temperature gauge usually reads at 1/4 with normal driving, varying only slightly. When the lights are turned on, it rapidly climbs to 1/2 or a bit over! Even when the turn signals are on for a few hundred yards. Could this be a ground problem? Should I install an aftermarket temp gauge? Let me know what you experts think this might be because I am thoroughly confused. Thanks!

It does sound like an electrical issue. Do you notice a drop on the volt meter when the lights are on? Just trying to see if you have an alternator problem or something like that.
An aftermarket gauge would be a nice backup to have even if you fix the stock one.
You may want to go here and download the FSM.

There are sections that show how to test the gauges to see if it is a problem with the gauge/sender or something else.
Good luck.

Thank you Kent! I am on it getting the aftermarket gauge...any brand recommendations? With 2000 feet to climb coming in from Temecula, I really want to make sure the engine is cool and I know what is really going on.
When I drive the car next time, I will observe the volt meter gauge...
