How often to re-tune an FD?

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the boards and to the rotary world. In fact, my car is still on the boat from Japan (92 Efini Type-R).

Anyway, everyone in my car crew is a rotary hater and I've been living with nothing but "has your car broken down on the boat yet?" or "so, is your LS1 on order yet for when your triangles explode?"

I'd love to keep my car as reliable as I can and I know proper tuning and maintenance are vital to all tuner cars, but RX7s especially.

Anyway, the car is getting tuned as soon as it hits our shores, as our fuel is significantly different from Japanese fuel. I also intend to tune it after major upgrades (ie injectors, turbo, etc.) but how minor of a change merits a re-tune?

My car is relatively stock (HKS Cat-back, Apexi intake), and I'd like to do some reliability mods (Intercooler, downpipe, etc.) but I'm 3 hours away from the nearest tuning shop. It DOES have Power FC, but I am not nearly confident enough with it to trust myself with tuning it. What (if anything) can be done before I need to tune it?

My exporter in Japan, who is very knowledgable when it comes to pretty much all vehicles has warned me that ANY mods could cause the car to be less reliable without a re-tune. Even changing over to hard-piping for the stock intercooler. That seems a little excessive to me. I know 13Bs can be fragile, but that seems a little overboard.

Any suggestions? I'm planning an aftermarket rad, front mount IC and single turbo next winter, with a tune when it's all done, but I'd like to do some minor stuff for now.

Basically, is it better to drive all summer with a stockish set-up, or drive with a downpipe, midpipe, intercooler piping and other minor stuff UNtuned?

I really don't to prove my friends right... please help!

Thanks!

I don't know much about RX-7s, I'm just a Scoob owner, but I have read that the pre-cat can clog up and kill your motor so you might want to replace that right away, keep in mind if you go catless you might see boost spiking.

The only other power mod you might want to consider without a tune would be a CAI, but with Scoobs that'll even make you run lean so hopefully someone more knowledgeable can help you out.
