S-AFC Questions

Well, I dont really know where to ask this, as it isn't really a 2nd gen related question, and not really a stand alone ECU question...

My 89 GTU is coming with a Apexi S-AFC II, but not tuned.

Now I honeslty do not know anything about these, other than the fact they regulate the fuel/air ratio at 500 RPM intervals...

Now, how hard is it to tune the AFC myself? How many dyno runs would I need to make?

Also, I have been told by a few that with almost ANY mod I will need to re-tune it. The current mods are cone filter, bonez cat, 2.5" catback, magnaflow mufflers. I plan on going to a true cold air intake (http://www.aztechrotary.********) and true duals, and possibly ignition of some sort. With each of these mods, will I need to re-tune the AFC? I will most likely install the full exaust and intake at the same time, and ignition will be later. Does this mean to get the power I want, I need to tune it when I get it (with the current exaust stated above) then 4-6 months later, re-tune it with the new exaust and intake, then wait another 3 months or so, and re-tune it AGAIN for the ignition? ( I cant afford all the mods at once, so I need to save up as I go)

Also, I'm in Raleigh, North Carolina and do not know of ANY dynos in my area. How comftorable should I be tuning this myself? I know not to go too lean, because of detonation.. im not COMPLETELY ignorant about it, just dont currently have all the knowledge about it.

Really, tuning the Super-AFC is really easy. It alters the airflow meter's output to richen or lean the fuel mixture out, and you can tune at both high and low throttle points, and multiple RPM points.

With an NA, you really don't need to dyno tune it - you *could*, but it's not necessary. I've tuned Super-AFC's just doing 3rd gear pulls on the interstate at night - have one person drive and the other tune.

Download the manual from Apexi's web site - http://www.apexi-usa.com and give it a good read. They just put up the manual for the AFC-II, so that's a bonus .

You could probably just tune with a simple AF gauge - NA's are much more tolerant when it comes to tuning a fuel curve. The factory fuel map is a bit rich, and tuning it can get you 5-10 horsepower, which is quite worthwhile. You might need to tweak the map a little with different mods, but it'll be pretty close.
