NC How I fixed my leaking convertible

A few weeks ago we had a major rain storm here in Raleigh. My 1990 convertible took on A LOT of water. The carpet under the driver seat was soaked, and the passenger side foot well had 1/2" of water on top of the carpet. I cleaned out the garage and got the RX-7 inside out of the rain. I had to install new plugs & wires, O2 sensor, and clutch master & slave cylinder anyways.

First place I looked to slow down the leaks was the side weather stripping. Using the search feature you can find 100 posts on how to fix it. This is how mine look.

After I got my repairs done, I backed the car outside during another rain storm. I noticed water running from under the dash onto the floor. It was either the windshield leaking or something else. Pulled the car back in and pulled my cowl apart. A Phillips head screw driver and a 14mm socket were all the tools I needed to get it apart.

The driver side drain openings were really clean, the passenger side had some garbage blocking them. I made a small hook tool out of a 24inch long piece of solid strand copper wire. This is a picture of the tool and what I pulled out of the cowl. Sharpie marker is for size reference only.

We did some running around last night, and surprise! We got caught in another rain storm. Mainly because I had just washed and waxed the car. I did not see any leaks from under the dash on the passenger side, and only the occasional drip from the side weather stripping. Occasional drip, I can deal with. Major leaks I cannot.

Hopefully this will help somebody with leaks in their car.
