I would apply for an abandon title. At least in Arizona or Washington

great stuff thanks. tho i would have to lie to get a adbandument title. the bonded title sounds a little better as long as i get a bill of sale.(easy) but still sounds hard to get a title on a car that hasnt had a title in over 10 years.

call ur local DMV. they will tell u exactly what u will need to do to get it titled in ur name. why is ur buddy selling it? did he find out he can't get a title? u may find out that ur just not able to get one. but by all means research it before u buy it.

Doesn't matter how long it has been sitting. When you buy it from the current registered owner, just sign the title to have it transferred. If the current registered owner doesn't have the title, then he/she can have one printed up at the DMV. Now if the car has been sitting and no-one knows to whom it belongs, then it is a bit more complicated. What you do will then depend on your local laws, so ask the DMV.

all great answers thanks. he feels like he got ripped(bought it wihtout the title) and was going to take it to a junk yard because he doesnt want to go threw all the work to get a title. no title has ever existed as far as i can tell for the whole ten years it sat there. i have researched the vin and came up with one previous owner who bought the car in 85. other than that it just says he lives in denver colo. some 600 miles away. i will call the dmv tomorrow(but for a 100 dollars i still may buy it just to use for parts or to turn it into a costum cruiser(down here there only for events and such) once again thanks
