Smile How Can I make my Fc Vert fast

So i bought a 1988 fc vert for 1k in decent condition with 112k miles and im a student in high school. i know that the rx7 is not a good first project car to work on but we have basically any automotive tool you could think of so i have the resources. I want to make my car fast and enjoyable and im currently cleaning it, ripping out anything unnecessary like carpets and plastic and will probably re carpet the whole thing. was just wondering what i could do. (im also trying to pay as little money as possible but if i gotta spend it i will)

So first off, welcome. I think you posted in the wrong forum. Maybe an admin can move it.

I'd try searching some topics and doing some reading. There is plenty of information out there on how to get some extra performance. Temper your expectations with a car that is 30+ years old, in comparison to a lot of newer cars.

Also start reading the stickies and information in the technical sections here:

Good luck

welcome to the board.

first, congratulations on getting your car (and for finding a running one at that price.)

second, it would be more helpful for you if you specify what exactly it is you're looking for from the car. saying things like "fast and enjoyable" are relative and doesn't necessarily put us all on the same page. i'm sure the car is plenty fast to get you in trouble as is.

regardless of what kind of performance you seek, the first things that you should focus on with your car are safety and reliability, so you should probably tend to the "boring" things for now before trying to make the car faster than it already is. things like making the brakes bulletproof (make sure all calipers are functional, flush the system, perhaps consider getting some new lines and upgraded pads) and firming up the saggy suspension (replace worn bushings and maybe upgrade a few things while you're at it) will go a long way to your enjoyment. make sure the cooling system is up to snuff. inspect your oil lines. get a full tune up! get 4 good tires under the thing. do these things before you begin your quest.

when it comes time to start thinking about more power, then start with a good exhaust system.

I agree with the above about getting the car reliable before taking on any major mods. Ripping the carpet out and deleting things isn't going to make the car that much faster. You're starting out with a convertible, which had quite a bit of extra weight compared to a base coupe. The "weight" you remove will only serve to make the driving experience worse. The road noise will be terrible and the car will not look great inside.

You can make the car faster by swapping in a TII engine, trans, ecu, wiring harness, and fuel pump. At that, you will be looking at a 0-60 time of about 6.5-7 seconds...adding a full Racing Beat exhaust system will gain more power and you should be around 6 seconds 0-60. Short of porting the engine and adding a larger turbo and intercooler and beefing up the fuel system and using a stand alone engine management system such as a microtech, that's where you will end up.

Now with the added power you will need better brakes and new suspension components and bushings. Everything has its price. You upgrade one thing and another needs upgraded. Engine upgrades require a better cooling system, so plan on that as well.
Here's the bottom line, if you want to go fast, prepare to spend A LOT of money.

Best advice ever...... ? Lose weight, you can go faster and look good doing it lol. In reality the Vert is slow, very slow by todays standards. A Nissan Micra could out pull you probably.

Best bet? Turbo 2 swap. or if you are uncle rich money bags you can invest into a 20B lol.
