Hi I'm here B/C my 89 vert needs a new OMP
This is a GREAT site!
I live in Richmond, VA. I always went to the dealer to get work done on my 1989 RX-7. Crown Mazda did OK, until they stopped selling Mazdas. Capital / Pearson TRULY SUCKS for any kind of mechanical work. So I've been going to Whitten Mazda since 2001.
However, my poor baby went into "limp mode" & the check engine light came on at the end of January 2009. Had no idea what "limp mode" was until I started researching things on the internet.
Then got around to taking the car to Whitten about a week ago and they said it needed a new oil metering pump. They said minimum, it would cost me $2600 to replace the OMP and could be as much as $3600 if the plastic lines to the engine had to be replaced.
So I started contemplating giving up my baby, but decided to do some research on this site, to see if there are any cheaper alternatives.
I found out about Angel on Jefferson Davis Hwy from a posting on this site. He said he'll be able to look at my car next week. I hope he can beat the dealer quote, otherwise I'll probably have to sell the car. But I REALLY don't want to give up my car just yet. It would be too many major losses in the last 12 months!
I think I'll check out the Richmond RX-7 club meeting this Friday night at Starbucks. From the postings on this site, it appears Richmond has a very active RX-7 club, which is great!

Once you get a few more posts, post an ad in the classified section of the board.

Thanks! I had already looked at mazdatrix and agree, that's VERY EXPENSIVE too!
I'm not sure I'm ready to take on replacing it myself, although IT IS VERY TEMPTING! I thought I had read some places, that IT IS REALLY HARD to do?? Maybe it's a lot harder on other models?
I'm scared that maybe I have hurt the seals because I drove it 30 minutes to get it to the dealer and drove it 30 minutes in Jan after the check engine light came on.
Angel (my new mechanic) says that used OMPs in good condition are VERY DIFFICULT to find. If I post an ad on this site, what are my chances of getting one in good condition?
I was wondering if someone could replace gaskets or rebuild my current OMP and get it back working again?

Looks like you found what you wanted, I was just wanting to throw a suggestion your way in case you didn't already know about it.
You could block off the OMP and run premix as an option too.
I am all for a new OMP though good luck, and welcome.

SO THAT'S what I've decided to do. I'm going to call a new RX-7 mechanic on Monday about going ahead with this approach. We have to decide how to fake out the ECU. I think I still may find a used working OMP to connect to the ECU, to fake it out, but block off the OMP to the engine.
pac11adp Stick some mix oil in the tank before you start that thing up next. I would have hoped thelast place would have told you that.
I was wondering if just pouring pre-mix in the tank right on top, will help enough? I was thinking about buying a gas can and putting a gal of gas in it with some premix and then putting that in the tank. Anyway, from what I've read on this site, it sounds like ANYTHING is better than NOTHING!!

A couple minutes of driving would likely stir things up enough to get it consistant, but if you're worried, mixing the oil with a gallon of gas wouldn't hurt anything.
Glad to hear you're keeping it! Rotary is an addiction, if you get rid of it it wouldn't be long before you regret it. I'll ask that you look through this thread (if you haven't already) just to be aware of some of the pros and cons of pre-mixing, just to make sure you're making an educated decision FTR, I'm not against pre-mixing, just think that people should fully research their modifications. Cheers!
