Help!!!!!! Tech ? For a 3rd gen

I have a Fd3s. The problem is SOMETIMES when I start the car usually on a cold start it revs high for a couple of seconds then stalls on me. When I restart it it runs fine but it's slower than a Toyota Prius!!!!! I know what ur thinking but it doesn't happen all the time other times it starts just fine and runs like a rocket. I don't have any heavy mods just boltons. There is no heavy smoke of any color and I have no check engine. What do u guys think I should check? Because I'm sick of everytime I get in my car it's like going to the casino......it's a gamble. Please help!!!

Bought the car in Atlanta in 2002. It's on it's 2nd motor I'd say it's got around 30-40k while the car has 120k. I barely drive the car only on weekend and obviously put it in storage throughout the winter season. I've got a Peter ferrule cat back and a Pettit intake that's it for hp mods. Others include Greddy intercooler piping & y-pipe & elbow. Koyo radiator and some aftermarket coolant hoses. Everything else is stock. What do u think?

I think it might be the Dashpot. The dashpot helps control the idle by controlling how quickly the throttle plates in the throttle body close when you let off the gas or when the idle drops quickly. Check the 3rd gen FAQ for a link to dashpot and other threads on idle issues.

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

If you are patient and handy, you should be able to leverage those threads to troubleshoot your problem. if you aren't, you may want to consider a local RX7 shop - which is why I asked you where in NY you were located. Here is a link to the NE section where there is a thread stickied there with RX7 shops in the NE.

Nope. Checked the dashpot and it seems fine. Now let's just assume worst case here. Let's just say that it was an all the time problem......so. My car starts then revs high and then stalls. Once I restart the car it drives slower than a civic hybrid. What do u think. By the way I want to say thank u for helping me out. This issue has been driving me nuts all summer long. I do know of some rx7 shops around me but none that r even under 2-3 hours away from me so if I could figure out the problem and fix it myself it would be nice. I do regular maintenance on the car along with installing some of the mods on the car so I am pretty handy. Looking forward to some feedback. Thanks. Do u think it could be a vacuum line issue?

That is odd. So if it starts normally, it drives normally? Does it only "drive slower" when you restart after stalling?

How much boost are you running?

The long drive to a rotary specialist is normal for this car. A regular mechanic won't know what to do with it while a good rotary specialist can diagnose and fix the problem in an acceptable time/cost. Its usually worth the drive.

IRP is in Clifton, NJ fwiw.

Heres the thing on a cold start it revs to about 2300-3000rpm then slowly goes down to normal idle. But sometimes it goes slowly down in rpm and then just shuts off/stalls. Other times it the rpms slowly go down and idles fine. And to answer ur question if I do have to restart it then yes the performance is gone. But when it does not stall it runs perfect. I'm being completely lagit here guys. I'm telling u it's weird. I'm running stock psi what is it 10-11? Like this morning. Started it for the first time and then it Went to idle perfect--ran perfect. Yesterday was completely opposite.

Any CELs? Have you read the codes from the ECU? The procedures and codes are in the FAQ.

U know what. I think I found the problem. I realy don't drive the car hard.....almost never. But on my way home from work yesterday the car had the same issue. Out of frustration I had pulled the car at high rpm and my boost cut off at like 4000rpm. I don't think my second turbo is even working when it stalls after start up. So turbo issue? Or it's defiantly a vacuum issue.
