Help starting

Okay, I tried to start my dads car that has been sitting in our driveway for six years. It's a 84 GSL SE. I put high octane gas in the tank after removing the gas . And starter fluid on the carburetor. I try to start it, but all it does is start for 2 seconds then dies. I did this and tried with two cans of starter, same results everytime. What should I do? Please help

Im really sorry if this is in the wrong thread

GSL-SEs are fuel injected, so where are you putting the starting fluid?

If it has sat for 6 years, the entire fuel system is trashed. The pump likely doesn't work, the filters are clogged, and the injectors are stuck/clogged.

This may help:

You need to flush the entire fuel system out very thoroughly, replace the pump and all filters, and have the injectors professionally cleaned.

its been sitting for 6 years... what happend before it sat for so long? you could check the tps or the afm, and check for vacum leaks if it starts then dies. could be your fuel pump. is the only thing youve done latley is try and start it, you havent messed with anything yet?

If it really does have a carb, then check the front and back windows. The fuel level should be halfway full in each window, but probably aren't. Post back with answer...

It has a holley carb. The pump is pumping gas. The pressure on the gauge is abouy 4 psi i think
The fuel injection was taken out for reasons my dad does not remeber. Well, it does start for awhile then dies. It seems that the gas isnt combusting.

Excuse my noobinesss i am 18, with a week old license. I have slim to none knowledge about cars.

If the pump is getting gas to the carb, then it must be the carb that is not letting it into the motor. If it starts at all, then you have at least some spark.

Sounds to me like you are getting it started on the starter fluid, and then it dies once it burns that off.
