GXL Tranny whine
i have an 86 GXL that i recently put a used tranny in, i replaced the t.o. bearing and the pilot bearing, filled it full of lube (uo to the bottom of the fill hole) and now when i have the clutch engaged( pedal NOT pushed) is has a whine that i can hear in the car, it makes the noise in every gear and the pitch changes when the load is increased or decreased. Im kinda thinking input shaft bearing but im not sure. any suggestions before i pull it out again and how hard is it to replace that bearing? Oh, its a s5 tranny in a s4 car to

Yeah, it sounds like the main bearing (or input shaft bearing as you put it). Replacing it means tearing down the whole transmission, and once there you can also run into trouble finding the correct bearing to fit it. My old NA transmission developed this problem, and I ended up getting it rebuilt & had the housing machined to accept and bigger, stronger main bearing.

I didn't do the rebuild myself. Just getting to the main bearing means taking everything completely out of the housing. And the bearing that was used was larger / more heavy duty. There was apparently a problem finding an exact replacement for the original, so scaling up was the only choice.
