GXL TII swapp
GXL TII swapp
Hello All, i Have an 88 GXL that i love. Im a little new to the site so i will give you the scoop on my car, its currently got the bonez intake, catless iApexi catback, Fluidyne all aluminum radiator, rims and rubber, KYB AGX shocks, suspention tech springs, stage 2 competition cluch, mazdatrix short shifter, mazdatrix aluminum driveshaft, and i recently finished swaping it over to a 5 speed from the orig automatic.
The question i have for you today is if anyone has done or heard about the JDM engine swapps. i want to get a TII engine and put it in the place of my stock 13B buuut im not sure if i will be able to smoothly get the wiring to work and all that. i see no reson that it should not phisicly fit in just fine (aside from the hood of course) oh and the the diff will prob need to be changed too. but will all the wiring like the dash and everything be the same? all and any imput is appreciated!

the engine will fit just fine. that's the easy part. wiring differences i'll defer to the guys that work with Gen IIs everyday. i only looks at them on occasion and never for something as serious as T2 conversion. don't see why you'd need to mess with the wiring in the dash. if it's simply to get a boost gauge, you're probably better off going aftermarket.
i may be mistaken, but double-check on your rear. i don't why, but i seem to have a vague memory that the GXLs shared the T2 rear, but not the tranny. so you'll need to change the tranny.

here's the scoop...
to wire up jspec ecu+ jspec passenger harness into a domestic market rx7... it's not fun. i've seen 2 friends do it first hand. the first project was a gxl to tII jspec swap. the dude had to run roughly 25 extra wires. the second project was a bit easier, probably because the friend helping my friend out was a wiring guru. your best bet would be an american tII ecu and harness or a standalone. don't quote me but the only bridge you should have to gap with and american t2 ecu and harness in a nonturbo would be the two wires for the alternator. hope this helps...
sincerely,
matt
