which to go with?? 12A or 13B??

hi guys my name is joe from Iowa. i am new here and looking for help from you guys (the experts) on which engine to go with.

what i am doing is building a drag vehicle that wieghts 300 pounds without an engine. this will be a one of a kind vehicle and won't be revealed until its done and running. hopefully in the next 1-3 weeks i have an engine done and ready for it. and in the next 1-8 weeks have the complete vehicle ready for the dyno.

this is what i know i will be needing.

intake to run 650 double pumper holley. as this will be carb'd. the only thing the engine will be running for accesorys is an ALTERNATOR. so this will be a easy project.

first i will be just running the carb. then after the fine tuneing is done i will add a single turbo then a twin turbo.

so my question is 12A or 13B engine???

i found 2 complete 85 12A engine cars complete locally for $500 for both and i am thinking about going that route first and part the 2 cars out to fund this winter project. what do u guys think?? i am new to these engines and you guys are the experts.

also i am buying this engine: JDM 13B-RE Cosmo Eunos RX7 93-95 1.3L Twin Turbo. but my question is with this engine where can i get an intake to run the holley carb on this???

any help would be great.

thanks

ok i just picked up the 2 1985 Mazda RX-7's with the 12A engine in them. one has a bad apex seal and hasn't been run in 2 years and the other engine only has 25,000 miles on it but it hasn't been run in 8 years.

so which engine would probably be the better one to go with?? what should i do before attempting to turn over the engine with 25,000 miles??

and i just bought an Racing Beat intake for the 12A engine tonight also and a holley carb for it also.

what else can be done to make the motor scream??

thanks

First off, a 650 is too big for a 12A. 500 cfm would be a good choice if you want a holley. The 465 is what most people use for 12A's with a decent amount of mods including a street port.

Where in IA you from?

To find out info on porting and what is what go to: www.mazdatrix.com and look at their FAQ section.

As far as the 13B twin turbo engine: Leaving it injected would be alot easier I think than to convert it to carb and also leave it turbo. Sure, you can do it and sure it wouldnt cost much but your tuneability would suffer and it probably wouldnt actually make that much power compared to a similar EFI setup. Im not even sure that your 650 would be big enough for a twin turbo engine, even with a large single turbo running it. Also not sure if there is even an intake manifold available to use a carb on the later 93+ engines.

well ok i am first going to start with the 12A engine. i have a racing beat intake already bought for it. i am giong to run a 500 cfm 2 barrel modified carb on it first and see how it works.

has anyone ever tried to run E85 or Alcohol with these engines??

now on the 93 twin turbo engine. are you saying a 13B racing beat intake will work on it?? it will be a 6 port engine correct??

also the only concern i have with leaving in EFI is that i won't have a traditional tranny and drivetrain under it for the sensors. so for the EFI to run correctly what sensors does it need to run correctly?? this is a reason i would like to go with carb'd. and with the twin turbos i can easily put on eany size holley i want. i own a carburetor shop.

thanks for the help.

NA 13Bs 84 and up are 6 port. Turbo 13Bs are 4 port. The 12A is 4 port along with pre 84 13B.

As far as running the 25k mile motor, you will probably want to take it apart and replace the soft seals. But if you don't want to do that you will want to put oil in it and turn it over a bunch.
