TX Getting Ready For My First Rebuild

Hello everyone, I recently had the coolant seals go out on my 87 NA. I really like the car, and would love to get it running again. It looks like I will be able to afford to rebuild it. So I ordered the instructional video from Atkins Rotary. I will get started (or postpone til later) after I watch the video.

As this is my first build, is are there any pro tips that are indispensable? Any tools that are real lifesavers?

I also watched this video, http://www.rebuildingrotaryengines.c...Rotor_Housings apparently, coolant seal failures can be very destructive. Should I expect to buy new housings as well?

And finally, since it will be all apart, I was thinking of getting it ported by Rotary Performance up in Garland, TX. But I have heard mixed reports about porting a 6 port engine. Anyone want to throw in their thoughts?

Wish me luck!

All I have to say about coolant seal blown motors is be sure that you use fogging oil in the engine if there will be any downtime between you parking the car in the garage and tearing apart the block.

Failure to do so can result in rusted internals and a junk motor. I let my car sit for a year before its rebuild, and even though coolant pooled in the housings over that year the block came apart fine and was readily rebuildable.

ATF works wonders as well... just dump some in the ports and give er a few cranks around... it'll dissolve the carbon for you too (to some extent)

Thanks for the tip. I don't know for sure how long it will be sitting, so I will for sure pick up a can of that stuff.

Porting 6 port engines generally results in a fairly hefty loss of low and midrange torque...So only a minor port job is recommended. I think a great example of this is the Mazdatrix template.

These videos may help you:

Mild port job. This shows a very specific port job for a very specific purpose, but is a great example of what's involved.
