SC Getting my car running

So I just bought an 84 rx7 gsl-se and there are a couple of things wrong with it and I would just like to know some general tips of what is most likely the problem.

1. When I try to start the car sometimes I have to give it a little gas for the engine to turn over, and this results in the carburetor being flooded by gas. I then have to wait for the carb to drain the gas and usually drains my battery starting it up during this time.

Could this just be the carburetor tuning? It is a Holley carburetor and I know that the Fuel pressure regulator is set at the highest setting at 5 (dont know if this affects it) It might also have to do with problem 2:

2. The car will absolutely most of the time not idle. When in neutral the RPMs rapidly drops below 1000 RPMs to zero RPMs and the car stalls out. I have to press the gas in neutral to keep the car from stalling out.

I've read that this is a fuel problem, likely the fuel filter being plugged or what not, but I didn't know if the idle problem could also be caused by the carburetor or not?

3. The 3rd problem isn't happening anymore because the car completely drops in RPMs during idle in neutral but at first it was running flat at 4000 RPMs in neutral. I know this car has a choke switch but this isn't connected - do I need to mess with that or is this all tied together with problem 2?

ANY helpful response would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Regards

welcome to the board.

sounds to me like you have a hot mess on your hands.

1. before doing anything i would strongly recommend going through and trying to figure out your entire fuel system (which Holley you have? which pump you have? how much pressure are you actually running? etc.). except for the misfiring and stalling in the midrange when it was lean, my brother's car seemed to act the same way off idle and lower RPM ranges when it was getting too much or too little fuel.

2. your next task should be making sure there are NO vacuum leaks whatsoever.

3. see what your plugs are telling you.

start with those three things (none of which are going to solve anything right now), because you need to know where you are now and this is likely to take a while to solve unless you have tons of time, day and night, to solve it.

I was able to adjust the throttle on the carb to get it to stop from stalling out but it still idles at a very high 2000 RPMs.

I will look into getting the carburetor and fuel pressure regulator information and start looking at the fuel system; im pretty sure there's a reason for the loss of power in the fuel system.

In the meantime do you know any good tutorials on this site or elsewhere for specific jobs on the 84 RX7s? They are not exactly abundant on Youtube due to the age. I'm an amateur mechanic and can't do a whole lot without any instruction.

Regards
