Fuel Pump cut-off relay location - 84 GSL
I'm at the end of my rope... I've got an '84 GSL-SE (13B, fuel injected) with no power to the fuel pump. I have a replacement cut-off relay purchased from the local dealer (so I know what to look for...) and a Chilton manual as well as the parts guy that tell me it should be located on the underside of the dash on the driver's side. I now have the bulk of the dash pulled asunder, screws laying everywhere, I've encountered several relays, but nothing that matches the replacement unit (and I believe it to be correct 'cause a previous posting of someone working the same issue included pic's that match my replacement unit). Any words of wisdom/encouragement? Failing that, I'm gonna just pull a wire from the fuse block (powered at key "on") to the pump - Is that a big "no-no" or just a 'lil dicey 'cause I no longer have the fail-safe circuit in place?

The check/cut relay is GSL-SE speak for fuel pump relay. It's on your passenger's floorboard. Pull the carpet away from the firewall, remove the galvanized plate you find there, and you'll find what you're looking for. It should be low and to the left of the ECU, and everything's bolted to the same little sheetmetal frame as the ECU.

Well.... I found the relay you reference, but it's a 5 conductor relay and the fuel cut relay the Mazda folks provided is 4 conductor. They're physically 'bout the same size, 'tho the replacement relay is rounded and the relay I found under the panel is rectangular. The relay I found to the lower left of the ECU is stamped 056700-6380 (12V) and is 5 wire, the purported replacement relay from Mazda is stamped FA-55-67-740 and is 4 wire. I contacted the parts guy trying to help me locate the relay on this "dinasaur" and he was unable to identify the "found" relay from the stamped number. I'm still stuck and wishing I had just run a hot wire.....

Lives on the Forum
The one you want is near the steering column, under the dash. There are multiple threads in the 1st gen section, describing how to bypass the relay if it goes bad. Good descriptions of the location, pictures, etc. Try a search term like "fuel relay bypass" and you should come up with something...

13b 1st gen fuel cut relay location
Well.... Looks like Crit gets the "attaboy" (and my thanks). The Mazda guys (both parts and service) were little help - I contacted both the Midland and Odessa dealerships looking for someone who was 1st gen knowlegeable and came up empty. I decided to trace the wires from the relay connection on the passenger side floor board recommended by Crit and lo and behold - it's a direct connection to the fuel pump wiring - so indeed, on 13B 1st gen vehicles the relay IS located on the passenger side at the base of the ECU beneath the removable cover plate. And, the carb versioned 12A's is (I guess) beneath the dash on the driver's side adjacent to the steering column. The relays are different! Both in physical appearance and wiring configuration - 4 wire for 12A and 5 wire for 13B - THANKS CRIT!!!!!!

Well, I'm here to give Crit another well deserved thanks. I spent a good uncomfortable hour trying to find this stupid fuel cut relay under the drivers dash in my 1984 GSL-SE before I came upon this thread. The relay is right where he said it was. Here is a picture of it that will hopefully help someone else in the future. The relay is at the bottom left of the ecu. The photo is too big to embed, so you'll have to click to view.

So, I know this is an ancient thread, but how do you test this relay to see if it us good? I suppose there is no jumper fix, but something treks me it's going to be an expensive replacement.
