fuel problem

i have an 82 rx7 and i put new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter and still cant get the car to accelerate over 6000 rpm! when i take off from a stand still it runs smooth but before i shift to second it starts to run rough, then when i stop at stop or light for a bit and take off it runs with power then gets rough. what could the problem be? i checked vaccum lines tried adjusting idle but cant figure it out! i need help bad!! could it be a dirty carb? would seafoam help or a good idea for an rx7?

Sounds like you are still having a fuel delivery issue.

I would start by removing the new fuel filter and inspecting it. This will tell you if the problem is a rusted/dirty gas tank.

Next would be to test how much fuel the pump is providing at the carb.

Rotaries love Seafoam. However, don't get fancy with it by trying to suck it into the motor through a vacuum line, instead just dump it into the gas tank. Works just as well that way, and avoids potential issues that you read about regarding Seafoam when it is sucked in through a vacuum line.

how i describe (running rough) i would say it feels like its holding back like blockage of some kind either exhaust or not enough fuel! how do i check fuel pressure from pump? it idles fine with no stumbling! thanks for your help. this problem is driving me insane.

i do have to tell you that prior to me buying the car it sat for a couple of months if that will help diagnose the problem! would seafoam free all the sticky parts in carb?

The best solution would be to 1 clean and rebuild carb. 2 if seafoming doesn't help then take off the gas tank and clean it to the best of your ability and while you are at it replace the fuel pump.

Most likely there is goo in your fuel lines which the seafoam should take care off.

Alright, how to tell if the carb is starving for fuel:

1. Get on the road and accelerate until it starts faltering.
2. Put in the clutch and let off the gas, just coast for about 10 seconds. (This is giving the fuel pump to fill the float bowls again).
3. After you've coasted for the 10 seconds, giver her the gas again.

The above will have produced one of two results:

a. Still bogging, no change. (This would imply a blockage inside the carb, or an ignition/electrical issue)

or,

b. She takes off with great power again, for a little bit anyway. Maybe a minute? As long as it takes to empty the float bowls again. (This would imply a blockage in the fuel system before it reaches the float bowls (inside fuel tank, fuel filter, failing fuel pump, blocked screens at inlet pipe on carb))

Hope this helps...
