Front cover question

Hi! I have a question regarding the circled component of the front cover in the picture below (this is not mine).

On my front cover this part was broken due to someone who hammered on it I guess, I want to know if this part is important in any way for any system of the car. Like the crank angle sensor system, even though I think not.

What do the experts have to say? Should I re-use my front cover if this part is broken?

If your cover looks like the one in the picture, it uses a Crank Angle Sensor.
That boss should have a very small diameter pin coming out of the center, ~ 1/16" diameter.
That pin lines up with the timing marks on the front pulley and is used to set timing with a timing light.

If it's a standard NA build, you can eyeball it and it should be close enough. On a turbo, it's more important to get the timing correct, so personally, I'd change it.
