front cover cracked- s8 fd pics inside
Hi guys,
Thought I might ask your opinions here. I am starting on a project fd,its a rolling shell. And I just bought a half cut from a wrecker, it was in a major accident, so the front cover is cracked. I have 3 months warranty, but the wreckers are being a bit difficult. I have another casing that I have off another motor, but in order to change them over:
I have never opened a piston engine nor a rotary do I have to torque down the bolts correctly?
What seals can I use, and will I need, and where can I get them?
Also one last q, does the s8 fd have a gearbox crossmember?
Thanks!

You'll find a link to the FD FSM in the FD FAQ. It contains complete procedures for pulling the front cover.
Off hand, you will need an eccentric shaft front seal, all water pump gaskets, metering oil pump o-ring, front cover gasket, front cover oil o-ring and maybe a few I am forgetting. The FSM is the best source of this info.
Be aware that the front bolt is torqued to about 90 FT-LBs and is held in with Loctite. You will need heat and an impact gun to remove it. Also there is danger of allowing a torrington bearing to slip down in the front assembly if this is done incorrectly. See http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm
