I have been away from Rx7's for the last 5 years. I obviously wanted my life taken over again so I bought another just over a month ago.

I have been trying to fix up a variety of little niggling things and the latest was that my coolant level sensor wire had ripped off the black sensor, so I took off the air filter elbows etc (has hks air filters) to get to the sensor to put it back on.

I may be being crazy but i'm sure it was then that the following situation started:


Start the car (when cold) the engine will sometimes then idle normally at 1000-1500rpm , but if I touch the throttle it will shoot up to 2000rpm and no matter what, it will continue to idle at that speed until the car is warmed up (3-4 minutes of driving) needle sitting mid way on temp guage.

Otherwise when starting from cold it will lower to 1000-1500 after start up for a few seconds and even without touching the throttle it will sit at 2000rpm.

I have also noticed that when you let the revs drop low when driving in 3rd to say (1200-2000rpm) you get a pop from the exhaust. Its running an apexi ECU, trust exhaust etc. and i am used to pops and stuff from the exhaust, but I am sure this only happened when i started getting the 2000rpm issue.

I took off the elbow etc again last night to check everything was sealed and clipped it properly, also checked all the vacuum pipes were good etc.

The only other thing I have done is secure the battery in the boot (it was previously held on with bungy cord) so i disconnected the battery. the ecu hasnt got in to a learning cycle or something perhaps and a few more runs might sort it out?


Anyway I hope someone can help as there appears to be a wealth of information on this forum, but from searches i couldnt find someone with the exact same issue as mine.

When the car is warmed the idle is between 850-1000rpm and the same when you hot start.

Sounds like there is something physically stuck around the throttle body.

I'm going to guess 2nd gen because it has the cold start thermowax. Please in the future, post the year of your car.

Check the throttle body especially the thermowax and cold start cam.
