Drivetrain capabilities

Hey all,

Was wondering if there is a general rule of thumb for how much power the stock drivetrain can handle on an FD. Transmission back.

Thanks.

Welcome to the board.

I don't think you're going to find a "magic" number for this. There are many factors that go into whether or not a tranny or rear end is going to crap itself, and they can do it a stock(ish) levels or at big power levels just as easily.

Never really looked into it and would hate to put a number to it. But generally speaking, I think both the transmission and differential are pretty robust. IIRC some of the guts of the transmission are shared with MAZDA trucks of the same era. As mentioned, if aftermarket engine mounts, transmission bracing, differential mounts and bracing are used, the components can tolerate more. Not certain, but I think some still use the differential with LS swaps. At some point, with wider, stickier tire and trying to make a car that was designed to turn into a drag car by driving like an ***-hat with 3 or 4000 rpm clutch drops,...anything will break.
