Detonation!
I have an 88 turbo 2 10ae with only an intake and Racingbeat full exhaust, and fuel cut defenser of course. When I boost up the car in 4th or even 5th gear it detonates/knocks like crazy, sometimes it happens in 3rd but not often. I want this fixed but DONT want to retard the timing and lose power, also DONT have enough money for a standalone. What do I do?
First off, if you continue driving the car hard like that, you will lose the engine. Guaranteed. For the time being, remove the fuel cut defenser. Fuel cut @ 8.6psi is much better than overboosting and getting detonation.
Your problem is the open exhaust and intake allow the turbo to overwhelm the stock wastegate (especially the tiny S4 one). In order to fix the problem, you need to port the wastegate larger, or re-introduce restriction to the exhaust system (like a catalytic converter). The stock fuel system is not going to support the boost level you're creeping to (easily 10-15 psi).

Thanks! but... I really dont want to tear down my engine again either lol. My turbo and exhaust manifold are both cracked so I think im just gonna go threw BNR when I get the money.Should I get an S5 Turbo? Do you think the AFC-NEO would fix the problem by dumping more fuel?
The stock fuel system is barely good enough for the stock turbo at 6-8 psi. An SAFC isn't going to do much of anything. By ~12psi, the stock injectors max out and the stock fuel pump takes a serious hit to flow rate. If you put a hybrid turbo in there, the engine will just blow even faster.
An S5 turbo has a better wastegate, but it will still not be large enough unless you port it. Any way you look at it, you're going to need a ported wastegate. Whether you do it yourself, or let Brian at BNR do it, is up to you. But if you use a hybrid turbo on stock fuel, you'll need to keep the boost as low as possible. Hybrids should not be run without larger injectors, a larger fuel pump & a tuneable ECU at the LEAST.
If you want a cheap setup that can support the stock turbo at ~12 psi, then get your ECU upgraded to the Rtek 1.7, buy two 720cc injectors for the secondaries, buy an FD fuel pump or walbro & buy a boost controller. And port the wastegate on the turbo.

Ok sounds good. Thanks for all the info, you have been a big help. I'm new to rotarys and im only 18 so I dont know a whole lot about engines. I have not yet purchased an aftermarket boost gauge so idk what im boosting as of right now, but the stock gauge goes allllll the way up. Money's tight right now so I'm trying to find the cheapest way to fix my problem. Thanks again!
Where can i find the RTEK 1.7? I THINK I found it online, it said it was 95-120 dollars and that it is just a chip that upgrades the stock ecu. Is that It? It confuses me because of the low price tag.

Nevermind, I found the rtek forum on here. The only option it gives for the 1.7 is for them(Digital Tuning Inc) to install it, but I dont like people working on my car. 1 for the cost and 2 my dad is a mechanic. Is that my only option? It can't really be that hard
What is the point of the RTek w/o the other items that Rotary Rocket mentioned in his last sentence? You are still on the stock fuel system so the RTek shouldn't make a difference since you can't flow anymore fuel than the stock injectors allow. Have you discussed this with your dad?
Im not planning on getting just the rtek. i will do it all when i get the money im just wondering where to get it. I know where to find everything else but there isnt much info out there about the rtek. When i save up about a $1k i will get everything i need, Just hope the car dont blow before then. Yea i talked to him but everything revolves around money
I wouldn't be surprised if there is more wrong than i know of... I dont know what todo about my car. I took it to battle of the imports and it ran a 15.5 which is horrible. I have got a 15.0 out of it but that still isnt good. idk if its the detonation killing my time or the cracked turbo and manifold. I love my 7 but has been nothin but problems

Take out the Fuel Cut Defender and stop flooring it until you either put back on stock exhaust or port the waste gate.
Detonation will destroy your engine, so stop letting it detonate. Did it detonate before you changed the exhaust and or put in the FCD?
Also, I hope you are putting in 91/93 octane gas.

+1 million
It doesn't take much to blow a turbo rotary when you run lean. All you need is one bad spike. Remove the FCD unless you are looking to spend $3,000-5,000 on a new motor.
You don't even need $1000 for the mods I mentioned.
Rtek 1.7 chip installed - $150
720cc secondaries - $150-250
FD pump - $20 used
Ported wastegate - free or < 1 hour of labor at a machine shop
I already said it, but if you continue driving the car in that state, the engine will be blowing any day now. Listen to us, we know from experience.

#1 I DONT BUY USED ANYTHING FOR MY ENGINE. #2 Its my dd and its all i got so i have to drive, im not gonna miss out on college to save my car. And of course i run 91 octane, sometimes even 100. with the 100 i get no detonation. Im not stupid i know wat detonation is and what it can do, im just tryin to find cheapest way to fix the problem. Thanks for everyones help. I know what im gonna do now
