Damn my brother and his FD 13BRE swap
sup fellas,
i'm the lucky bastard that gets to swap in a 13BRE into my brother's 94 FD. Basically i want this done before the 27th of December when my brother gets here from the Navy.
i've talked to a couple people about doing this before getting started and i know it's been done before so i'm up for the challenge. basically i was wondering if i could get some information from some of the more technical members that have done this swap before in hopes that i may get some advice/tips that saves me time and helps this go a lot more smoothly.
i'm pretty mechanically inclined and i've done many crazy swaps over the past decade like vg30e into an 87 rx7, ls2 into a 95 240sx, all the SR20 and RB swaps in every nissan chassis just about including the hardbody nissan pickup truck. i also wired up Bustadog's Microtec on his 20b FD. my specialty is wiring so if you guys know of any wiring i need to do to make this work that'd be appreciated so i can start gathering information.
we have a very good fabricator at the shop so the motor mounts and intercooler piping won't be a problem. i've already got the motor fit into the engine bay and i was able to use the FD's oil cooler lines even though the BRE has m16x1.5 threads for the oil line on the timing cover where as the BREW has m18x1.5 banjo bolt. basically i found a long enough m16 banjo bolt with big enough crush washers to seal.
the next opsticle is the power steering/ac bracket. my bro's gonna be in san diego for a while and he's really insistant on having the ac, so i'm contimplating using the FD ac compressor and p/s pump and altering the BRE bracket so it'll bolt to the motor. or just using all the BRE accessories and modifying the lines. i'd rather not mess with getting the lines fabbed up but the BREW belts are poly groove whereas the BRE belts or single v-belts. that one's still in the air.
the FD this is all going into had a blown motor but a lot of bolt on goodies and although it would have made my millenia to just get a 13brew, drop it in there , and be done with it, i am unfortunately not that lucky lol. the deal was already made and the cosmo 13BRE /w 20k miles was already purchased.
He got the car for a pretty decent price and it came with a couple goodies: D-Jetro Power FC, Greddy Profec-B Spec 2 EBC, Tein Coil Overs all around, a 62-1 in good condition with i believe a turbosmart 45mm external wg, 3" exhaust all the way back to a Racing beat muffler, an aeromotive FPR, GReddy FMIC, a gay HKS ssqv (i hate those dog toys), a Koyo radiator, and some cheap pillar mount ricer guages and a couple other big woopty doo at least it's better than stock accessories.
sorry for the novel but i appreciate you all's time and help. if there's any other brick walls i'll be running into please share.
i know the BRE has a CAS and the BREW has a trigger wheel. any suggestions for that hurdle?
thanks in advance,
Dave

i think i know you. you work at lethal injection? i was there when steve kan was there. im the guy with the silver FD.
anyway, why do you want to put an RE motor in? the gains(if any) are minimal over the REW. and the REW simply bolts in.

ya, whassup masin =]
my brother hates me i guess. he couldn't just get an REW. he had to punish me with unneeded brain usage and various fabrications.
ya i talked to steve kan the other day about the cam angle sensor instead of the trigger wheel like the REW and we talked about the timing etc.
steve's got an RE in his FD so he was really helpful. he saved me a lot of time already.
my bro had already got the RE motor otherwise i would've got an REW and been done with it.
we're making pretty good headway on the swap. i have to modify his custom fuel rail to fit from the REW to the RE, but that's not a huge ordeal.
masin since the last time you came to Lethal we hired my boy Kyle which is teh masta tig/mig/stick welder/fabricator. if we didn't have him here i would've had my bro sell the RE and got the REW cause it wouldn't have happened with MY welding skills or lack thereof hahha.
all in all tho i like the challenge. if it can be done, we can do it. i'll keep ya posted and maybe i'll start taking step by step pics so someone else won't have to pioneer it on their own time/dime.
take care

here's some updates/pics i took today
here's the measurement in MM of the bigger ports on the 13B-REW using a cheap set of digital calipers (aka don't write the measurement in stone but it's pretty close)
here's the measurement of the smaller REW ports
here's the measurement of all the ports on a 13b-RE
here's the 13b-RE sitting in the 1994 FD engine bay. i know u like that football gasket i made
here's the crossmember modification so the 13b-RE's oil pan didn't hit the subframe
here's one of the motor mounts you'll need to put a 13b-RE into your FD. pay no attention to the sexy 280z it's resting upon
another pic of the mount
a closer shot of the mount

a pic of the FD on the lift
and another, nice tail lights, and on the left is my new tool box , had to label all the drawers with stickers so when someone needs something i can tell them which drawer it's in. (sometimes it sux having the good tools, everyone except you is always using em >_<)
parts on the ground
his turbonetics 62-1 before i cleaned it
and after. btw they have a 62mm inducer and 88mm exducer for the compressor wheel (in case u wondered, i measured it while i had it off)
i'll take more pics as the progress continues. i have a good feeling we'll have it done by the 27th when my bro gets to GA

we're not that far from FL hrmm hrmm ^_^
i got the REW accessory bracket to bolt up by simply removing the top stud on the RE's timing cover. that was an easy one.
then i put the REW's crank pulley's on
after i made the RE's timing marks into it, like so
so now the motor looks something like this
since the car has an aeromotive FPR and bigger secondaries it was time to get rid of the g4y stocker crap. we had to mod the fuel rail from the REW and make it about an inch shorter and give it some mounting tabs, like so
and
once that was taken care of, i bolted up the shiney turbo and ran into an issue with the plumbing, ie the oil return flange where it meets the motor and also the return hose just didn't reach so i needed a new longer piece of -10 steel braided hose. the 2 bolt flange on the front of the motor on the REW has the holes close to each other where as the RE's are farther apart. so we made a flange and welded a -10 steel fitting to it, voila
then i found some free time to take more whorish pics of stuff around the shop like this sexy JDM carbeurated 12A-T motorset we have
and
and
some people don't even know that motor even existed....now ya do
i'll post more pics as i make more headway. i need to make a block off plate for the lower intake manifold still, and i moved the IAT from the underside of the REW upper intake to what was a banjo'd air bung on the underside of the RE's upper intake manifold. the threads were the same too
take it ez,

here's today's progress
and
the next 2 days i'll be cleaning up the wiring harness and making it sexy, then gonna freshen up the intercooler piping cause it wasn't that great before.
more pics and vids to come. we still gotta strap this puppy to the dyno and tune the power FC =]

What do you guys charge for PFC tuning? Do you offer it to others than your brother I am down there at Road Atlanta alot, and need a new tune in my FD
Nice work BTW, Very nice brother to do this for him. I am rebuilding a FD for a Speacial forces Army guy that just got back from his 4th tour!! Pro-bono of course. I can sacrifice the time
And is that the 12A Turbo from the FB in Japan only? Very nice piece.

more pics
here's the 13b-RE accessory bracket with my finger as the ruler. pay attention to the hole by the tip of my finger
here's the 13b-REW accessory bracket. notice the top hole is farther up
here's the stud you remove from the RE's timing cover to use the REW's bracket
this is what rx7 guys refer to as the "rats nest"
you get to delete all this crap when you get rid of the stock sequential twin turbo set up and either run the twins together or go single turbo. luckily we have the single 62-1
here's the the motor looks like without the rats nest under the upper intake. you can see just how clean this RE motor is by seeing how nice the stock Oil metering lines are if you look closely
here's the uber restrictive brick wall 90 degree coupler that definately HAD TO GO
here's all the other couplers it had. those going in the trash too. aside from there being too damn many of them, some were dry rotted and cracking
and Kyle's sexy new and improved piping that fits under the hood support rod (unlike before) as well as the cold side which snakes nicely under the strut bar, along with upgraded 3 ply couplers instead of 1 or zero ply it had before
and a side shot
more pics to come. since the whole plan was to get this thing running, tuned, and on the road by December 27th when my brother gets here from his ship in Maine (which is like a week away) it'll stay like this.
once he goes back to base i wanna send the turbo exhaust side, the manifold, the down pipe, all the intercooler piping as well as the intake manifold to our high temp coaters. that stuff is so BALLER! it's like heat wrapping your stuff without the expensive heat wrap and it looks like this
continued.....
