Coolant Temperature Sensor or Thermosensor?
Coolant Temperature Sensor or Thermosensor?
Hey everyone, kinda new around here.. I've been looking at lots of threads and trying to decipher what I'm really dealing with. I have a 1990 FC Turbo Convertible with a 13b street port. Yesterday I replaced my spark plugs and everything went great. Unfortunately, while I was driving my car today I noticed my temp gauge (stock) wasn't reading at all. When I checked near the spark plugs, I found a sensor (located just underneath the oil filter) and it had a connector on it.. but on the other end of the wire it wasn't connected to anything. I'm guessing while I was changing the plugs, I must have jarred the connectors loose thus losing my temp gauge reading. Firstly, what is this sensor called? While looking for information, I've come across different names, wiring diagrams, etc. Since it's located directly on the side of the engine and it measures the temperature of the engine I would assume it would be a coolant temperature sensor. That being said, I've looked everywhere near the sensor and cannot find any connector that would match up with the end of my wire. I've spent hours with a light searching for a wire or connector to attach and I'm getting frustrated. I mean wires don't just disappear.. I've looked at wiring diagrams but I'm not too familiar with them. I'd like to know what kind of stock wire I should be looking for that would be coming from the temp gauge inside the car. There are lots of random harnesses around the same area but none of them have a free wire dangling there waiting to be connected again.. I don't know if all the wiring in there is stock or if someone has tried to rewire some things.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
(I have pictures of the wire connected to the sensor but it keeps failing to upload, I'm guessing the file size is too big or something)

coolant temp sender should have a yellow wire with a "red stripe" I believe..I know yellow anyways.
it will go to a small finger sized sender near the oil pedestal..under or Beside the bell shaped oil pressure sending unit.
the wire should have a Bullet type connector on it..(if not a Single spade). The coolant temp sender operates by only the one wire.(yellow.)

Perfect! I found a single yellow wire with red stripe hidden underneath some wiring .. unfortunately the connector on the end of it doesn't fit the connector from the sensor wire. Is there any way I can test the yellow to make sure it's the one leading to the stock gauge?
Thanks for the quick reply.
Thanks for the quick reply.
So I connected the yellow wire with red stripe to the wire from the sensor... gauge didn't move at all. I'm stumped. Someone must have done some shotty rewiring because I can't find anything else that looks similar. Anyone know if I can just run one wire straight from the sensor, through the wall and into the gauge? I mean I'd rather just do that then spend more time searching for some damn wire hidden under my hood.
