Clutch issue with 88 RX7 Vert

I made one stop on my way home from work tonight. About a half hour later I cam out and started the car but ground gears shifting into reverse. Then tried to go into first gear first, with same grinding. I got it in gear, but the clutch pedal felt wrong-- spungy and didn't seem to be coming all the way up. Managed to get a short distance in second gear then parked it.
It's a 1988 RX7 convertible (non-turbo) with just 30k verified miles on her. Bought it three months ago.
Could it need a new clutch already?
Is it a massive shop job?

Any guidance appreciated.

Sounds like the clutch master cylinder to me.

Well done! That's what the shop says. Because the car is 23 years old but has so few miles on it, it will suffer from the effects of too much sitting and not enough driving. He said the master and slave cylinders were "crusty." He dismissed the need for a new clutch at 30k and is going to bleed and replace the hydrolics. Some shop time, but nothing like a cluch replacement.
Thanks for the response.

Just FYI: When you replace the clutch master replace the clutch slave at the same time. This is one of the easiest DIY jobs. Parts cost <$75 and takes about an hour to do the first time.

I'd strongly suggest you do this instead of a shop or find a friend to help you. Not a job I'd pay a shop for.

Glad to hear you got it figured out and no problem man. I figured it couldnt be the clutch failing with such low miles and the symptoms you were having sounded just like a failed clutch master cylinder. Do you have any pictures of your vert posted up?
