Red face Choosing a Tranny & gearing

Hello

New to racing,..building a street RX3 to use in autocross and some track days as well as regular driving.

The plan is to Street port my 12a.
Do I throw in a 83 RX7 5spd tranny or do I do something different?

I heard of some guys using the RX7 gear boxes and then switching the internals over to Miata gearing.

Guess it depends on porting , carburation and the general use of the car ?
Any suggestions to match up my engine and car usage?

Haha, hope I didn't answer my own question?

Read through this. http://www.mazdatrix.com/g1.htm
In your case, any non-turbo 83-91 transmission will work with, at most, a tailshaft housing swap. Messing with gear ratio's is very common unless it's a dedicated race car, so don't lose any sleep over it.

Whats up man. Congrats on choosing an old school rotary to set up for the twisties... lots character & cool factor! Nothin' like a stanced '2' or '3' with fat rubber all around.

Hey thanks for the feedback guys!

It's a tough one for me to answer because my car is in the hands of race car builders and I am a new driver for them since last year. Thing is , they allways want to go hard core Lol. I want drivability , (best of both worlds) w no turbo just N/A . I dont have to worry about Air- Care here at least : ]

The car I raced for the team was an 83 RX7 w a mild port , modified carby , full exhaust and suspension mods,..it was an ITA class RX7 in ICSCC sanctioned racing. Dam fast it was! I was only 2 seconds a lap slower than the Subaru WRX-STI. The Team told me it was making 190 HP.

Its just scary to think how fast that car was and how much faster and lighter my RX3 will be and street legal too,..dont want to go overboard. This is why I am taking the time and spending the money to get it all done right the first time .

Its allways great to get second opinions ,..there is alot of knowledge on this site!!

very nice project. keep us posted with new updates. also,in my RX-3, I'm running miata internals on a FB tranny housing. I just chopped the miata input shaft, instead of machining it as mazdatrix indicated. So input shaft no longer sits on the pilot bearing.
