Barnfind 13b

What would be the precautions of buying a 13b from a barnfind '82 rx7. The exterior of the engine is rusted as hell, and I'm worried about the inside of the housings and irons. From what the guy said it isn't seized up. It's for $1000. I'm more than happy with rebuilding it.

Is it worth the buy?

Appears to be a 12A from an 81-early 83. Not a 13B and not work $1000 in my opinion. It looks like it has higher mileage given the oil leak on the front cover. Appears to have the wrong oil filter on it which leads me to believe it wasn't maintained properly. Its worth a look if you're close by but be prepared to offer much less than the asking price.

Normally this goes against the New Member Tech rules, but you should ask him where he gets his crack...

RX7's didn't get a 13B from the factory until 1984, and it was EFI not carbureated. All 79-83 ones had a Carb'ed 12A. On the rotor housings, above the spark plugs, do you see the flat spots on either side of the Oil Filler Pipe? Clean those areas off and it'll tell you what it is.

If it's a 13B, it looks like a 74-78 13B, which the 12A was descended from. Otherwise, it's a 12A at a crackhead price.

Final offer: Tree Fiddy and the seller cleans the years of goo off it for free.

Thats initially what I thought, I find it funny its not even a 13b yet its listed as one. Its quite a drive away so I won't be stopping by. I'll keep looking for other motors. Thanks for the help guys.

it's cast into the rotor housings if it's a 12a or 13b. i've never gave more than a few hundred dollars for engines of unknown condition/not running. for $1000 on a used stock engine, i'd expect to be able to drop in and go with it.

just as a point of clarity, so did the 1984-85 (S3) cars. the SE was sold alongside the 12A cars, so the "little" 12A ran the full production of the Gen 1 cars.

Interesting I guess I had just assumed all EFI FB's were swapped.

Fuel injection was introduced on the U.S. RX-7 in 1984. It was a 13B with Bosch fuel injection and a dynamic effect intake system. It carried over into 1985 mostly unchanged other than a slightly different 5th gear ratio and if I remember correctly, the final drive was changed by a very small margin. Its trim lever was called the GSL-SE.
