PA Are all TII hoods Aluminum?

I've searched but have come up empty. I have an aluminum hood on my convertible. I have read that you need the arms/hardware from an aluminum hood to mount another aluminum hood (or that from a steel hood to mount another steel hood; ie: they're not interchangeable). So I would like to know if all Turbo hoods with the scoop are aluminum since I would like to pick up a TII hood to go along with the swap. Thanks in advance.

No not all TII hoods are aluminum. Most are yes, but some are not. I havent heard of swapping over hinges, etc to make it work. I didnt and my aluminum vert hood works just fine with my previous steel hood stuff.

Bring a magnet when you go to look at a hood. Also, the steel hoods have the latch welded in place instead of riveted.

Fitting wise the hinges and latch should fit either hood. The aluminum hood fit just fine on my S5 GTU. I think the concern with the hinges is the material they are made out of and the possiblity of corrosion due to the electrical mismatch of the aluminum-steel materials. As I recall, the latch for the aluminum hood has a different, less-stiff spring, but as long as you are careful when shutting the hood--no problem.

Thank you - and thanks for clarifying the hardware issue as well.

Thanks,

Not sure of exact weight, but its a decent strain picking up the hood itself if steel versus no problem whatsoever if aluminum.

From RETeds weight list:
87 TII steel hood=52 lbs.
87 TII aluminum hood=29 lbs.
So the difference is around 23 lbs., good for 1 HP.

-later TIIs had a mix of the two

I think that's it.

Sure. Lots of mostly good info on the forum. Finding it with the less-than-sterling search engine can be difficult, though.

You just have to know how to use the search feature. Put in the correct inputs and it will give the desired outputs.

Yeah, and many irrelevant posts that have one or more of the phrase words you are searching for. If you have a one word search--fine. But if you want to do a focused search using Boolean logic--forget it. You know, this phrase, and this word but not this word, etc.

It's hard to find an alluminum hood on ebay for a decent price used. I have two steel hoods but would love to get an alluminum turbo hood for my 88 vert
