advice for new buyer

I’m trying to buy a RX-7 fd. What should I look out for when I check out the car, and what issues would I potentially be facing down the road?

Welcome to the board.

Start with browsing the Gen 3 FAQ thread. When you have absorbed that, then post whatever lingering questions or points for clarification here. I'm sure someone will be happy to help.

I'd suggest the following as a minimum:
- checking for smoke on startup (oil is ok, coolant is not)
- doing both a cold start and a hot start
- getting a compression check
- checking no boost issues on the twin's, should be 10-8-10

If there's something wrong with the car, and the owner claims it's an easy and cheap fix but he just hasn't had the time to do it himself....assume he's lying on all counts.

Also, check the normal things more thoroughly. Fraud is more common.
Paint overspray
VIN on the firewall matches the other VINs

If the engine has ever been rebuild. Depending on the car mileage.

Have a certified mechanic look at it. And, a body shop inspection.

To add on to this good point:

Find out if there is documentation on the rebuild. Can be difficult to assess reliability without knowing its history. If you’re planning on rebuilding it anyways, then the documentation is not necessary.

In my opinion i would say don't rush into the first one you see that you like. I personally never owned an FD yet. But i plan to buy one in the next year or two( i will be doing all types on research on this forum before ibuy) i did come across some great links for Do's and Donts, What to look for, Testing the boost, compression, etc.

Good luck with finding and buying one. But remember these cars can get expensive in maintenance.
