Newbie buyer, got some advice?

My wife and I finally need a second car, something to get me to and from work. I suppose I could buy like a '95 Neon, but I can't even tell you how much I miss my old Camaro, so i'm thinking about getting another sports car. I've had a friend reccomend the RX-7 to me so I'm looking into it.

There's a few RX-7's in the chi-town area for around 3 grand. One has a "new factory motor" with about 30k miles on it. That SOUNDS good to me, but I'm about as ignorant as they come.

SO, when I"m calling these people about their cars, what kind of questions should I be asking them? What should I make sure is checked and how can I be sure I'm getting a car that will last another few years. I can only spend around 3grand, so I'm looking at 88-89 models. Any advice at all would be GREATLY appreciated.

teach42,

Hey check the "newbie question" post at the beginning of this forum/2nd gen section and that'll answer most "how to buy" questions. Also there's some great writeups on teamfc3s.org.

Yeah if you love fun cars, imagine your camaro except with better handling, 50/50 balancing, taking corners faster, unlimited revving with no pistons to break, and 350-450+ HP potential on the Turbo II model. Imagine the same thing on one of the best convertibles ever made too.

As you can imaging the rx-7s have an international following from manufactuers, tuners, car fans, and car nuts. Definitly a BLAST to drive and more fun to talk about.

Here's a quick welcome package for you

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey welcome to the forum.

The best thing about the rx-7s is the car is 100% designed as a TRUE sports car - not a

"sports coupe" or "sports sendan."

The Turbo II is a SUPERCAR and is the tuners DREAM CAR. Mazda designed the car with 450HP in mind but detuned to 200/180 ft-lbs torque. What that means is you can GO NUTS designing a porsche killer for little $$$.

The rotary engine is PERFECT for a sports car. Mazda designed the rx-7 to take 130% advantage of it. That means you get lightweight HIGH OUTPUT performance, UNLIMITED REVING (there's nothing to break), small engine means sweet aerodynamics = low drag. Handlign is the BEST part of the rotary experience. The chassis has rear steer like some porsches, so you can kick some serious butt around the corners. The car handles & drives so well - it inspires you to push the car beyond what you think it's capable of

Best of all, the rx-7s have an international following from tuners, manufacturers, and enthusiest. That means you have a wide selection of performance upgrades, accessories, bodykits, coffeytable books, toy models, and knowlegable people.
