Red face acceleration problems '83 12A

I am having problems with my'83 rx-7. It has little power. It is running rich,lots of gas smell. Can the shutter valve not opening at all cause this. I need to get this fixed. Help Plz

Is the car stock? if your sure its running rich, it sounds like it could be the choke sticking closed or maybe a sticking float in the carb causing it to dump excessive amounts of fuel into the motor. It could also be some sort of restriction in the exhaust as well. Post a few more details on the car so the fine people here can narrow it down.

My car is a stock model with al the rats nest in all it's glory and stock exhaust and carb.(niki) I cleaned out the cat but not the muffler. i will try this soon. thnx for the help. All ideas are welcomed.

check the vaccum system or you might have a bad carburetor
