Question 89 Rx7 N/a adding stock turbo??

Hi my name is Rob. Right now I own a 98 honda prelude that I am selling for a 89-91 Rx7. I always wanted one and now I'm moved out and am looking for one .

I'm having one problem though. All the the turbo rx7's in my area are in terrible condition or just high miled. I found a really nice 1989 N/a Rx7 GTU $3,500 20k on the engine 80k on the body, its very clean, little rust. I'll have about $2,500 to throw into a turbo right away. Seeing how I had 2 choices either build my own kit or try and find a 13b-t swap. I found the swap for $1,200 and I figured a swap would be alot of work or money lol. I thought well if I could just take the turbo pieces off the swap and just throw them on the gtu and trade the ecu's. It would be a cheap way to start the boosting process and I would have a spare engine and trans.

But my plan had a flaw when i realized the the intake manifold is on a different side of the engine from the n/a to the turbo. Which means the top mount intercooler wont fit. Does anyone know if this idea would even work if i just got a greedy intercool kit?

Check out this page. http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/naturbo1.htm

AaronCake has already done extensive write-ups on the subject. I think the general concession is that you will be better off doing a swap or buying a Turbo model in the first place. I own an N/A model, I have just come to terms with the fact that I will just have to buy a turbo motor and do a swap. There are many reasons why turbocharging an N/A is not a good idea. Just use the search function and you will see what I mean.

However, it can be done, there are just better ways of obtaining a boosted RX7. Happy Posting.
