OK '89 engine into '88 vert chassis...

I'm wondering how easy it is to swap an 89 n/a into an 88 n/a or if it will even work at all.

Thanks for your time, Mike

It will get complicated. The simplest route is the to strip the S5 engine down, swap on the S4 front cover, water pump housing, throttle body & electronics. The S5 intake manifold is better, and will match up with the keg, but converting the engine to be run with existing S4 wiring and electronics means the VDI and 6PI systems will be non-functional. You'll have to use something like an RPM switch / air pump setup to control them. The 6PI could actually be run off exhaust backpressure from the split air pipe (S4 method), but it was a shoddy activation method when the car was new. And if you alter the exhaust at all, it'd be a good bet there will no longer be adequate pressure for the actuators.
