88 t2 auto to 87t2 manual

Hey there I have an 87 t2 manual , the car has been sitting for years with no motor which I had pulled out thinking I was going to do a swap but plans changed an want to keep stock.

i found a 88 t2 engine automatic for sale local and thinking of buying it to drop in my 87. My question is will this be a simple plug an play swap. The engine is imported from Japan and is 88t2 automatic I was thinking of just buying the engine and putting that in my 87 with my s4 manual transmission. Is there any difference in the engines at all or what else I would need to make it work and or will this all fit perfectly.

welcome to the board.

i don't think it should be a problem, but i'm certainly not well-versed in the differences between USDM and JDM. for the most part, i think the engines themselves are pretty much the same, and whatever differences do exist would probably be a matter of swapping over the corresponding parts from your '87.

when you took the engine out of your car did you remove the engine harness with it? unlike the engines, i think harnesses are different on the ECU side. (for example, i think the JDM cars had knock sensors where the US cars did not.) so if the engine is coming with a harness you will not be able to just plug it in and be all good.

Hey yes I did leave the harness in the engine bay . And yes I agree with you with Jdm harness being different I’m just hoping I can figure this out if I do decide to buy it. And gotta be quick bcuz these engines will sell quick.

You'll need to install an eccentric shaft pilot bushing for the manual trans. Not a big deal though.

Emissions between usdm and jdm are different. So if you’re wanting to keep your usdm emissions you’d resort to sticking to your intake manifolds.

the shortblocks (keg) are the same though.
