87 transmission smoking?

I was cruising yesterday for like 4 hours straight and i always noticed that my tranny runs hot, but when i finally stopped in the parking lot, there was smoke coming out of the shift boot. Not sure if it's the oil is old or its low or what. I tried using the search option but it pissed me off because it tells me that nothing came up for "transmission." Any help would be appreciated. Btw the car has 104,000 miles and i'm barely gonna do a full tuneup. Only changed the oil and filter.

The smoke could be from an oil leak anywhere in the engine/transmission area. The metering oil pump lines and oil cooler lines are common leak points. The smoke can travel up the transmission tunnel, and past the shift boot if it's not sealing. One thing to do is replace the shift boot: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm. The other is to find the leak that's causing the smoke.

Yes, it's likely there is an oil leak of some sort dripping onto the header. The transmission will not create smoke externally even if it's leaking, it doesn't produce enough heat.

Damn, you guys are good lol. That's exactly what it was, a small leak getting on the exhaust and traveling up the shifter location.

Now that you know it is leaking, you should check the transmission Fluid level.

Yeah I did, everything is fine with the car other than small really really slow leaks.
