RX-7 FD drowned ! Worth buying ?

Hi,

I already have a clean running FC.
I could not believe my eyes when I saw this at the local news:

Please note, its just a screenshot no video !

When I drive to work with my FC I often see this FD parked at this place.
And now due to snow melting and heavy raining the parking lot has been flooded.

The local news and radiostations told all the people to get their cars out of the parkings. But somehow the owners of 1 MX5 and this 7 did miss it. Perhaps they
are on holiday I dont know.
Maximum water level was at the moment when the video was made.
And if you look close you can see that the level is not that high in the inside.

I would like to buy this FD if the owner lets me, I will offer him 500$.
I know for sure the assurance wont pay him a 1Cent because this place is known
to bee flooded from time to time, so this car will go to the junkyard for sure.
If nobody gets it.

This is the only RX7 I met in this country (exept mine) since half a year.
In a country where everyone drives new cars like BMW Audi Porsche & co I am sure
that nobody will buy a drowned 7.

What do you think ? Is it worth to buy ?
I dont think the engine will be damaged physically.
The car needs to be cleaned inside and out and the electronics need to be checked.
There will be a lot to check.
IMHO it is a older 3 gen.

I dont want to see this FD go to the junk, clearly it wont be the same as before
(especially interior) but hey it is a 7 !
I am currently (completly) restoring a 1981 Delorean so I think my mechanically skills arent that bad
Tomorrow I will drive by and take a look at the car.
Unfortunatly I dont know the owner, I ll need to put a ticket on the screen with my number.

Any help will be appreciated
Steven

For $500 it could very well be a great bargain. BUT, be prepared for a ton of work and budget for a sizable amount of money to be spent beyond that. You'd have to disassemble the entire car basically to encourage every component to dry out, inspect for any permanent water damage to the interior parts, replace those, spray the other interior parts to protect them. Exterior wise you'd likely have to re-grease every bushing, re-pack the bearings, steam the underside of the chassis, etc. But, your money will likely be spent on rebuilding the motor (if you have those kinds of resources relatively close to you and are not comfortable doing yourself) and replacing (likely) every inch of the wiring harness.

So in a random guesstimate I'd say... $500 purchase price + $4000-7500 parts/repairs, seriously.

But hey, if you can restore a Delorean than this might be your ticket!

Not sure about prices in Luxemborg, but here if you could get it for $500 it would be worth it....but only for a parts car. You'd be better off, money and time wise to look for a compete running car and part this one out.
There will be virtually nothing usuable left of the interior. Restoring all things electrical would be a nightmare. Suspension ??? And you can't count on the drivetrain internals staying dry.

If you get it swap a V8 in it it will be cheaper in the long run seriously though bringing a car back from a watery grave is hardly ever worth the effort. The motor will most definitely by shot since it is moisture that destroys the rotary when storing them.

Thanks for your answers,

I went to the parking lot the next day but the 7 was gone.
A friend of me knows the owner, and said that it had a blown engine.
He does not exactly know whats damaged, but thats why it sat there.

Apparently the owner wants to keep it, I dont know what he wants to do with it.
I am glad that id did not go to the junk.

I think this thread can be closed, but thanks again for the answers.

Or, its a good investment opportunity.
Buy the car, chop it apart and sell it off make more money.

IMHO the car only worth it's body and suspension parts. All interior parts and most of the engine bay probably needs discarded and/or replaced / rebuilt. FD interior parts are extremely expensive.

It might make a good start to a project racecar but as a street vehicle I would not consider it.
