Unhappy 87 rx7 runs rough periodicaly

i purchased an 87 rx7 for my kid . the person that owned it before me had played w the wiring of the car as he was attemting to add an aftermarket alarm. all the wiring issues have been addressed and i was able to start the car. the problem is once running,it can idle for 10 minutes w no problems and then all of a sudden it starts to smoke and wotn rev. i try to rev it up to make it clean out but it sputters ,backfires,, n smokes as if too much fuel.if i drive it,it will run great then as i am driving it the same thing happens and it doent go away til i continue to clean it out,but it happens also at cruising speeds..once cleaned out the car runs amazing...any thoughts?

If you suspect a problem of too much fuel you can listen for proper operating sounds from the primary injectors with an inexpensive automotive stethoscope. If you have a stopwatch and a fuel pressure gauge you can do a crude injector balance test with the ground wire for each injector at the ECU. You look at the fuel pressure drop by grounding each injector for 1/2 or 1 second or so. Compare readings for the 2 injectors. They should be roughly the same.

Make sure the TPS is set properly. All you need to do is take a voltage reading on the Green/Red wire at the TPS plug after the car has been driven for 20 minutes or so and w/key to the voltage reading on the wire ougt to measure one volt. If it isn't then turn the screw surrounded by a spring which is located on the front of the throttle body that is part of the throttle linkage til it reads one volt.

Meant to say to take the voltage reading "with key to on" instead of "w/key."
